Romeo 5 Gen II • 2 MOA Red Dot • MOTAC • M1913 Picatinny • NV Compatible
The Sig Sauer Romeo 5 Gen II is the latest generation of one of the most widely adopted red dot sights in the civilian and professional markets. Built around a precise 2 MOA red dot reticle and powered by a single CR2032 battery rated to an average of 40,000 hours of runtime, it delivers reliable, fast-acquisition performance in a compact, rugged housing rated IPX7 waterproof. The Gen II brings updated controls, an interchangeable I-BEAM mount system, and Sig's full suite of lens treatments to the platform.
The standout technology in the Romeo 5 Gen II is MOTAC™ (Motion Activated Illumination Control). The sight monitors movement through an internal sensor: when the rifle is picked up or repositioned, MOTAC automatically powers the optic on to your last-used brightness setting. When the rifle is set down and remains idle, MOTAC shuts the sight off to conserve battery. The result is an optic that is always on when you need it and never left on accidentally — no manual power management required, though manual control is always available.
The lenses carry three proprietary treatments working together. SpectraCoat is Sig's multi-coat system optimizing light transmission for a clean, bright sight picture. LensArmor provides an abrasion-resistant hardcoat to protect against scratches from debris, holsters, and field use. LenShield adds an oleophobic and hydrophobic outer treatment that repels oil and water, keeping the lens clear and making it easier to wipe clean. These coatings work in combination, not in isolation.
Ambidextrous top-mounted illumination controls put the brightness dial within reach of either hand without repositioning the support hand off the handguard. The interchangeable I-BEAM mount locks the Romeo 5 Gen II to any M1913 Picatinny rail, and the I-BEAM system allows the mount to be swapped for other compatible configurations if your setup changes.
✔ Best for: AR-15 and Picatinny-railed rifle shooters who want a proven red dot platform with MOTAC power management, premium lens coatings, ambidextrous controls, and a 40,000-hour battery. An excellent everyday-use optic for range, home defense, and field applications where a reliable, set-and-forget red dot is the priority.
✘ Not for: Shooters who specifically need green dot illumination — see the Romeo MSR Gen II (SORMSR102) for a green dot option. Not designed for handguns or pistol mounts. Not a magnified optic — for long-range precision use, pair with a magnifier.
ℹ Note: MOTAC activates based on motion and will power the sight on when the rifle is handled. In storage or on a safe, consider powering off manually if battery conservation is a priority over extended periods of inactivity.
The SOR5101 ships with the sight and mount hardware needed for immediate installation on any M1913 Picatinny rail.

MOTAC stands for Motion Activated Illumination Control. An internal motion sensor monitors whether the rifle is being moved or is stationary. When the rifle is picked up, shouldered, or repositioned, MOTAC detects the movement and automatically powers the sight on to your last-used brightness setting — no button press required. When the rifle is set down and remains still for a period of time, MOTAC shuts the sight off automatically to conserve battery. You can also power the sight on and off manually at any time using the top-mounted controls. MOTAC is particularly useful for home defense applications where you need the optic to be immediately active when the rifle is grabbed.
These are three distinct lens treatments applied in combination. SpectraCoat is Sig's multi-layer anti-reflective coating system, which increases light transmission through the lens for a brighter, clearer sight picture and reduces internal reflections that can distort the dot. LensArmor is a hardcoat scratch-resistant treatment applied to the outer lens surface, protecting against abrasion from debris, holster wear, and general field use. LenShield is an oleophobic (oil-repelling) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) outer coating that prevents fingerprints and smudges from bonding to the lens and causes water to bead off rather than sheet across the glass. Together, they keep the lens transmitting clearly and make it easier to maintain in the field.
The I-BEAM is Sig Sauer's proprietary mount system for the Romeo 5 Gen II. It locks the sight securely to M1913 Picatinny rails and is designed to be interchangeable — meaning the mount can be swapped for other I-BEAM compatible configurations without replacing the optic body. This gives you flexibility if your rail setup or desired mount height changes over time. The included I-BEAM mount provides standard Picatinny compatibility out of the box.
Both are 2 MOA non-magnified reflex sights from Sig Sauer's Romeo line with 12 brightness settings and IPX7 waterproofing, but they differ in several meaningful ways. The Romeo 5 Gen II (SOR5101) features MOTAC motion-activated power management, SpectraCoat/LensArmor/LenShield lens coatings, ambidextrous top-mounted controls, an interchangeable I-BEAM mount, and a red dot reticle. Battery life averages 40,000 hours. The Romeo MSR Gen II (SORMSR102) features a green dot reticle, a rotary illumination dial, a redesigned see-through riser mount, and a 35,000-hour battery life, but does not include MOTAC or the advanced lens coatings. The Romeo 5 Gen II is the more feature-rich option; the Romeo MSR Gen II offers green illumination at a lower price point.
Yes. Two of the 12 brightness settings are dedicated night-vision-compatible modes, set to a low output level that will not bloom or overwhelm a night vision device's image. The NV settings are selected via the same ambidextrous top-mounted controls as the daylight settings. Compatibility with your specific NV device should be confirmed, as optimal brightness can vary between NV generations and manufacturers.
The Romeo 5 Gen II is rated for an average of 40,000 hours on a single CR2032 battery. MOTAC's automatic shutoff when the rifle is idle helps achieve this runtime in practice by preventing the common scenario of leaving the optic on unintentionally between use sessions. At typical shooting frequency, this translates to years of operation before a battery change is needed. The CR2032 is inexpensive and available at hardware stores, pharmacies, and most general retailers worldwide.
Yes. The Romeo 5 Gen II carries an IPX7 waterproof rating, tested to withstand temporary immersion in water to 1 meter depth for up to 30 minutes. It is also fog-proof, with internal sealing that prevents moisture from entering the optical path during temperature transitions. The LenShield hydrophobic lens coating additionally causes water to bead off the outer lens surface rather than sheeting across it, maintaining sight picture clarity in rain or wet conditions.
