FX7 Prefit, RemAge®, or Savage®?

All three use the same 416-R stainless, 5R, honed and lapped, nitrided barrel. What changes is how the barrel attaches to the action and how headspace is set.

Why not an FX7 Prefit on a Remington 700®? Remington-pattern actions vary in how far the bolt face sits from the receiver face, so a prefit cut for the FX7 will not reliably headspace on them. A RemAge® barrel adjusts to the action with its nut, which is why it is the choice for a factory 700 or a clone.

Choose Your Cartridge

8.6 Blackout comes in the original 1:3 twist (use ammunition loaded for 1:3) and the SAAMI-standard 1:6. 338 ARC comes in a 1:5 twist for heavy subsonics and the SAAMI 1:8. 6mm ARC was designed by Hornady; see Hornady’s 6mm ARC page for ammunition and data. Bolt face: 6mm ARC, 338 ARC, 300 Blackout, .223 Remington, 350 Legend, and 6.5 PRC do not use the .308 Win-size bolt face. Make sure your action has the matching bolt face before you order one of those barrels.

Choose Your Profile

Gunner. The Gunner profile keeps steel where a barrel needs stiffness, at the shank and through the first part of the barrel, and trims it out front. It is Faxon’s light, fast-handling contour for carry rifles and hunting builds.

Medium Sporter. The Medium Sporter is a classic sporter contour with more steel than a light hunting barrel. It balances weight and stiffness for rifles you carry and still want to shoot well from a bench, and it is a natural fit for short suppressed builds.

Heavy Sporter. The Heavy Sporter adds steel over the Medium Sporter for more stiffness and heat capacity on longer strings, while staying light enough for a field rifle.

M24. The M24 is a heavy tactical contour modeled on the classic military sniper profile. It is stiff, slow to heat, and steady from a bag or barricade, which makes it the choice for precision rifle matches and long strings at the range.

10. Laser-engraved with the cartridge and twist, then final inspected

5R rifling uses five lands with sloped sides instead of sharp corners, which deforms the bullet less and fouls less. Salt-bath QPQ nitride is a diffusion treatment, not a plating: it hardens the bore and exterior and adds corrosion resistance while adding virtually nothing to the dimensions, a few ten-thousandths of an inch, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair. It needs little to no break-in.

What’s in the Box

Every Faxon bolt action barrel ships with a thread protector. 8.6 Blackout barrels also include a taper adapter for the tapered M18x1.5 muzzle. RemAge® barrels include the RemAge® barrel nut, and Savage® barrels include a Savage®-style barrel nut. Headspace gauges and wrenches are sold separately; Faxon offers the FX7 action wrench and an 8.6 BLK GO/NO-GO gauge set.

Suppressors and Muzzle Devices

Most barrels are threaded 5/8x24; 22 Creedmoor and .223 Remington are 1/2x28; 8.6 Blackout is M18x1.5 with a tapered shoulder. Match the suppressor bore to the cartridge: HARMONIX® ION .30 for .30 cal and smaller, HARMONIX® ION .36 for 8.6 BLK, 338 ARC, and 350 Legend. Which Faxon bolt action barrel fits my rifle?

Faxon FX7 action: FX7 Prefit or RemAge®. Remington 700® short action or a 700-pattern clone: RemAge®. Savage® 110 small shank: the Savage® 110 barrels. For any other action, start with a profiled barrel blank and have a gunsmith chamber and fit it.

Will an FX7 Prefit fit a Remington 700?

No. FX7 Prefits are chambered and headspaced for the Faxon FX7 only. For a Remington 700® or a clone, choose a RemAge® barrel, which sets headspace with a nut.

Can I install a RemAge® or Savage® barrel myself?

Yes, with the right tools: a barrel vise, an action wrench, the nut wrench (AR-15 armorer’s wrench for RemAge®, Savage barrel nut wrench for Savage®), and GO/NO-GO gauges for the cartridge. Thread the barrel in to a GO gauge, lock the nut, and check with the NO-GO gauge before firing.

Do Savage® barrels fit large shank actions?

No. They fit Savage® 110 and other small shank actions with a 1.0625-20 tenon, not large shank actions such as the 110 PCS.

What comes with a Faxon bolt action barrel?

A thread protector with every barrel, a taper adapter with 8.6 Blackout barrels, and the barrel nut with RemAge® and Savage® barrels.

Are the bores honed and lapped?

Yes. The bore is honed before 5R button rifling and lapped after chambering, then the barrel is magnetic particle inspected and salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside and out.

Do nitrided barrels need break-in?

Little to no break-in. Nitride hardens the bore and resists corrosion and fouling while adding virtually nothing to its dimensions.

Which 8.6 Blackout twist should I choose?

The original 1:3 twist is built for heavy subsonic bullets; use ammunition loaded for 1:3. The 1:6 is the SAAMI-standard twist and runs SAAMI-spec 8.6 BLK ammunition.
