What Is the Faxon FX7 Bolt Action Receiver?

The Faxon FX7 is a precision bolt action receiver manufactured by Faxon Firearms in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is built on the Remington® 700 short-action footprint — the most widely supported standard in custom rifle building — which means it accepts Remington 700 pattern triggers, stocks, chassis systems (KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR, Manners, McMillan), and scope bases without modification. The .308 bolt face supports .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, 6GT, and 8.6 BLK calibers with Faxon FX7 Prefit or RemAge-style barrels.

The receiver body is machined from 416 stainless steel. The bolt is machined from 4340 carbon steel and features Faxon’s signature flame fluting, an M16-style extractor (S7 tool steel), a plunger-style ejector, and a 17-4 PH stainless steel firing pin heat-treated to H900 condition. The six-lug bolt design (two rings of three) provides a 70-degree throw — shorter than the 90-degree lift on legacy two-lug actions — for faster cycling and greater clearance under low-mounted optics.

Every FX7 receiver includes an integrated 20-MOA Picatinny rail and an integrated recoil lug, eliminating two components that are typically purchased and installed separately. The FX7 accepts AICS and AW pattern magazines and is compatible with FX7 Prefit barrels, RemAge-style barrels, and profiled barrel blanks for custom gunsmith work. Faxon also offers the FX7 Action Wrench for barrel installation and removal.

Is the FX7 compatible with Remington 700 stocks, triggers, and chassis?

Yes. The FX7 uses the Remington 700 short-action footprint and is compatible with Remington 700 pattern triggers (TriggerTech, Timney, Bix'n Andy, Jewel), chassis systems (KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR), and stocks (Manners, McMillan, Bell & Carlson). Some stocks may require minor inletting to accommodate the FX7 trigger hanger.

What calibers does the .308 bolt face support?

The .308 bolt face (.470" diameter) supports .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, 6GT, and 8.6 BLK. These all share the same bolt face diameter. Faxon offers FX7 Prefit and RemAge-style barrels in each of these calibers in Gunner, Medium Sporter, and M24 profiles.

Why does the FX7 use a 6-lug bolt instead of 2-lug?

The 6-lug design distributes locking force more evenly across the bolt face than a 2-lug configuration, promoting more consistent lockup. It also allows a shorter 70-degree bolt throw (vs. 90 degrees on a 2-lug action), which means faster cycling and more clearance under low-mounted scopes.

Do I need a gunsmith to install an FX7 barrel?

No. Faxon FX7 Prefit barrels are headspaced at the factory and thread directly onto the receiver — no lathe work or gunsmith is required. The FX7 is also compatible with Faxon RemAge-style barrels. Faxon offers a barrel installation service ($20) and sells an FX7 Action Wrench for DIY installation. Profiled barrel blanks are available for those working with a gunsmith on a custom barrel.

What magazines does the FX7 accept?

The FX7 accepts AICS and AW pattern magazines — the standard for modern precision and tactical bolt action rifles. Compatible options include Magpul AICS PMAGs, MDT metal AICS magazines, and Accurate-Mag AICS magazines. Magazine compatibility may also depend on your chassis system.
