What Is the ARAK-21® Upper Receiver?

The Faxon ARAK-21® is a patented, long-stroke gas piston upper receiver system that drops directly onto any standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver. Unlike conventional direct impingement (DI) AR-15 uppers, the ARAK-21 uses a dual-reciprocating long-stroke piston — the same operating principle proven in the AK platform — combined with a self-contained recoil system that eliminates the need for a buffer tube, buffer spring, or receiver extension.

This means the ARAK-21 runs cleaner (hot gases and carbon stay forward of the receiver), runs cooler (no gas channeled through the bolt carrier into the action), and unlocks stock configurations that are impossible with a standard AR — including side-folding stocks, skeleton stocks, and PDW-style braces. The bolt carrier cycles entirely within the monolithic upper receiver, never extending rearward into the lower.

Designed by Robert T. Faxon and manufactured entirely in-house at Faxon Firearms' 60,000 sq ft facility in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, the ARAK-21 is protected by U.S. Patent 9,032,860 B2 and backed by Faxon's Lifetime Guarantee. It is the weapon system that launched Faxon Firearms as a brand — and it remains the most modular, adaptable piston-driven AR upper on the market.

How the ARAK-21® Piston System Works

The ARAK-21 operates on a long-stroke gas piston system — the same fundamental operating principle used in the AK-47/AKM platform, proven across decades of combat worldwide. When a round is fired, propellant gas is tapped from the barrel through an adjustable gas port and pushes a piston that is permanently attached to the bolt carrier. The piston and carrier travel rearward together, extracting and ejecting the spent case, then return forward under spring pressure to strip a new round from the magazine and lock into battery.

Unlike a direct impingement AR-15 — where hot, carbon-laden gas is routed through a gas tube directly into the bolt carrier group inside the receiver — the ARAK-21 keeps all combustion gases forward. The result is a dramatically cleaner action, reduced heat in the receiver, and significantly less carbon fouling on the bolt and carrier. This translates to longer intervals between cleaning, more consistent function across thousands of rounds, and better performance when running suppressed.

The self-contained recoil system is the other defining feature. The ARAK-21's recoil spring and guide rod are housed entirely within the upper receiver — there is no buffer tube extending rearward. The bolt carrier completes its entire cycle inside the monolithic upper. This means the ARAK-21 does not require a buffer tube, buffer spring, or receiver extension of any kind, which is what enables folding stock compatibility and shorter overall collapsed length.

The 5-position adjustable gas regulator allows the shooter to fine-tune gas flow for specific ammunition, barrel lengths, and suppressor use — from full-power cycling to single-shot mode. This level of adjustability ensures reliable function across a wide range of conditions without replacing parts or modifying the system.

ARAK-21® vs. Direct Impingement & Other Piston Uppers

The AR-15 platform has three main operating system options: direct impingement (DI), short-stroke piston, and long-stroke piston. Each has trade-offs, and understanding them is key to choosing the right upper for your build.

DIRECT IMPINGEMENT (DI)

Standard AR-15 operating system. Gas travels through a tube into the bolt carrier group. Lightest weight, most aftermarket support, but routes hot gas and carbon directly into the receiver. Requires a buffer tube.

Best for: lightweight builds, budget builds, shooters who prioritize aftermarket ecosystem.

SHORT-STROKE PISTON

A piston gives the bolt carrier a brief impulse then returns. Cleaner than DI, smoother recoil feel. More moving parts and potential for carrier tilt in some designs. Most still require a buffer tube.

Best for: shooters wanting a cleaner action while staying close to standard AR ergonomics.

ARAK-21® LONG-STROKE PISTON

Piston stays coupled to the carrier for the full stroke — proven AK-style reliability. Self-contained recoil eliminates the buffer tube entirely. Fast caliber conversion with just an Allen key. Fully ambidextrous with tool-free reversible charging handle. Monolithic billet upper.

Best for: suppressed use, folding stock builds, multi-caliber setups, duty/hard-use, shooters who want maximum modularity and reliability.

Where the ARAK-21 stands alone is in its combination of features: no other piston upper on the market offers fast, tool-assisted caliber conversion between 5.56 and 7.62x39, a fully self-contained recoil system with no buffer tube, and a monolithic billet upper receiver — all in a single, drop-on package that fits any AR-15 lower you already own.

Multi-Caliber Modularity: 5.56 NATO & 7.62x39

The ARAK-21 platform is designed from the ground up for fast caliber conversion. Using Faxon's Barrel Assembly Units (BAUs), a shooter can swap the complete barrel, trunnion, gas system, and piston components as a single drop-in module — all you need is an Allen key. The BAU locks into the monolithic upper with a secure latch, and the entire swap takes minutes.

For a full caliber change (5.56 to 7.62x39 or vice versa), Faxon's Caliber Conversion Kits include the BAU plus the matching bolt, giving you everything needed to completely reconfigure your ARAK-21 or XRS firearm. Both BAUs and Conversion Kits are available in 12.5" and 16" barrel lengths.

Suppressed Performance

The ARAK-21 is one of the best host platforms for suppressed shooting in the AR-15 ecosystem. The long-stroke piston system keeps combustion gases forward and out of the receiver, which means significantly less blowback to the shooter's face when running a suppressor compared to a direct impingement AR. The 5-position adjustable gas regulator allows you to tune gas flow specifically for suppressed operation, reducing bolt velocity and felt recoil for a smoother, quieter shooting experience.

Pair with Faxon's MuzzLok® muzzle devices or Plan B compatible brakes for fast on/off suppressor mounting. The ARAK-21 is compatible with Faxon HARMONIX® suppressors and most standard thread-on or quick-detach cans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ARAK-21 fit on a standard AR-15 lower?

Yes. The ARAK-21® Complete Upper Receiver drops directly onto any standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver using the existing front and rear takedown pins. No modifications to the lower are required. You do not need a buffer tube, buffer spring, or receiver extension — the ARAK-21's recoil system is entirely self-contained within the upper.

Can I use a folding stock with the ARAK-21?

Yes. Because the ARAK-21 does not require a buffer tube, you can use folding stocks, wire stocks, skeleton stocks, or PDW-style braces with any AR-15 lower. The bolt carrier cycles entirely within the upper receiver and does not extend rearward, so the stock can be folded without interfering with operation. This is one of the ARAK-21's most significant advantages over both DI and most short-stroke piston AR uppers.

How do I convert the ARAK-21 from 5.56 to 7.62x39?

To convert between calibers, you need a Faxon ARAK-21 Caliber Conversion Kit (from $450), which includes a Barrel Assembly Unit (BAU) and the matching bolt. The BAU integrates the barrel, trunnion, adjustable gas system, and piston components into a single module. All you need is an Allen key — remove the existing BAU, insert the new one, swap the bolt, and you're ready to shoot. The entire process takes a few minutes with no armorer's tools, bench vise, or headspace gauging required. You will also need 7.62x39 magazines.

Is the ARAK-21 good for suppressed shooting?

The ARAK-21 is excellent for suppressed use. The long-stroke piston system keeps combustion gases forward and out of the receiver, dramatically reducing gas blowback to the shooter compared to direct impingement AR-15s. The 5-position adjustable gas regulator includes a dedicated suppressed setting that reduces bolt velocity and felt recoil for smoother, quieter operation. The ARAK-21 is compatible with thread-on and quick-detach suppressors, including Faxon's own HARMONIX® line and MuzzLok® suppressor mounts.

What is the difference between the ARAK-21 and a standard piston AR upper?

Most piston-driven AR-15 uppers (like short-stroke systems) still require a buffer tube and receiver extension, and the bolt carrier still cycles rearward into the lower. The ARAK-21 is fundamentally different: it uses a long-stroke piston with a self-contained recoil system, meaning the bolt carrier never leaves the upper receiver and no buffer tube is needed. Additionally, the ARAK-21 offers fast, tool-assisted caliber conversion between 5.56 and 7.62x39 via Barrel Assembly Units — a capability no other piston upper provides. The monolithic billet upper, fully ambidextrous controls, and QPQ-hardened steel carrier rails further set it apart.

Is the ARAK-21 compatible with full-auto fire control groups?

No. The ARAK-21 is designed for semi-automatic operation only and is not compatible with full-auto or select-fire trigger groups. It functions with standard AR-15 semi-auto fire control groups, including most aftermarket drop-in triggers.

What comes included with the ARAK-21 Complete Upper Receiver?
