What Is an FX7 Barreled Action?

A barreled action is the core of a bolt-action rifle: the action (receiver), bolt, and barrel assembled together. A Faxon FX7 barreled action includes the FX7 short action, the complete FX7 bolt assembly, and a 416R stainless steel barrel — all factory-assembled and headspaced by Faxon before shipment. This is not a complete rifle. You will still need a trigger, stock or chassis, and magazine to finish your build.

Buying a barreled action instead of a standalone receiver eliminates the barrel installation, torquing, and headspace verification steps from your build. Every FX7 barreled action ships with the barrel torqued to 65 ft-lbs and headspace verified with a GO gage — ready to drop into a chassis and shoot once you add a trigger and magazine.

The FX7 action is machined from 416 stainless steel and finished with ArmorLube™ Matte DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) — the mil-spec coating designated MIL-PRF-32711. The bolt is machined from 4340 carbon steel with the same ArmorLube™ treatment and features Faxon’s signature flame fluting, an M16-style extractor (S7 tool steel), a plunger-style ejector, and a 17-4 PH stainless steel firing pin heat-treated to H900 condition. The six-lug bolt design (two rings of three) provides a 70-degree throw for faster cycling and greater clearance under low-mounted optics.

All barrels are 416R stainless steel with 5R button rifling, honed and lapped bores, salt bath nitride finish, magnetic particle inspection, and a recessed target crown. Every FX7 receiver includes an integrated 20-MOA Picatinny rail and an integrated recoil lug. The FX7 barreled action is built on the Remington® 700 short-action footprint for compatibility with Rem 700 triggers (TriggerTech, Timney, Bix’n Andy), stocks and chassis (KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR, Manners, McMillan), and AICS/AW pattern magazines.

Medium Sporter

Balances rigidity and weight for field and suppressed use. Available on 8.6 BLK barrels (12" and 16"), where the heavier contour handles the demands of .338-caliber pressures and suppressor weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a barreled action?

A barreled action is the core of a bolt-action rifle: the action (receiver), bolt, and barrel assembled together. Every Faxon FX7 barreled action ships with the barrel torqued to 65 ft-lbs and headspace verified with a GO gage at the factory. It is not a complete rifle — you still need a trigger, stock or chassis, and magazine to complete your build.

Does the FX7 barreled action include the bolt?

Yes. Every FX7 barreled action includes the complete bolt assembly — 4340 carbon steel bolt body with flame fluting, M16-style extractor, plunger ejector, firing pin, cocking piece, bolt shroud, bolt handle, and all springs and pins.

What do I need to complete a rifle build from a barreled action?

You need a Remington 700 pattern trigger (TriggerTech, Timney, Bix’n Andy, etc.), a Rem 700 short-action stock or chassis (KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR, Manners, McMillan), and an AICS or AW pattern magazine. Optionally, add a scope, rings, bipod, and suppressor. Faxon’s Bolt Action Builder tool can help you configure a complete build.

Is headspace set before shipping?

Yes. Every FX7 barreled action is headspaced and verified in-house at Faxon before shipment. The barrel is torqued to 65 ft-lbs and headspace is checked with a GO gage specific to the chambered caliber.

What calibers are available in FX7 barreled actions?

FX7 barreled actions are currently available in .308 Winchester (18" Gunner and 22" M24), 6.5 Creedmoor (20" Gunner and 24" M24), and 8.6 Blackout (12" and 16" Medium Sporter with 1:3 twist). All use the same .308 bolt face, so you can swap calibers later with an FX7 Prefit barrel. Additional calibers including 6GT and 6mm Creedmoor are coming soon.

What is the difference between a Gunner, Medium Sporter, and M24 barrel profile?

Gunner is Faxon’s proprietary lightweight contour for field rifles where weight is a priority. Medium Sporter is a mid-weight contour that balances rigidity and portability, used on 8.6 BLK barrels. M24 is a heavy contour based on the military M24 Sniper Weapon System barrel profile, offering maximum thermal stability for sustained-fire precision. All three use 5R button rifling with honed and lapped bores.

Can I swap the barrel on an FX7 barreled action later?

Yes. The FX7 is designed for user-serviceable barrel changes. FX7 Prefit barrels are headspaced at the factory and thread directly onto the receiver — no gunsmith required. The FX7 is also compatible with RemAge-style barrels and profiled barrel blanks for custom work. Faxon offers barrels in .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, 6GT, and 8.6 BLK (1:3 and 1:6 twist). Use the FX7 Action Wrench for barrel changes.

Is the FX7 compatible with Remington 700 stocks, triggers, and chassis?

Yes. The FX7 uses the Remington 700 short-action footprint and is compatible with Remington 700 pattern triggers (TriggerTech, Timney, Bix’n Andy, Jewel), chassis systems (KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR), and stocks (Manners, McMillan, Bell & Carlson). Some stocks may require minor inletting to accommodate the FX7 trigger hanger. AICS and AW pattern magazines are supported.

Should I buy a barreled action or a standalone FX7 receiver?

If you already know the caliber and barrel length you want and prefer the fastest path to a finished rifle, buy a barreled action — the barrel is installed, torqued, and headspaced at the factory. If you want to choose your own barrel (different caliber, contour, or length) or plan to use a profiled blank from a custom gunsmith, buy a standalone FX7 receiver and pair it with an FX7 Prefit or RemAge-style barrel.

Where are FX7 barreled actions made?

FX7 barreled actions are designed, machined, assembled, and inspected by Faxon Firearms at their facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Faxon is an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer with a precision machining heritage dating to 1978. All FX7 barreled actions are covered by Faxon’s Lifetime Guarantee.
