What Is the Faxon FX7 6.5 Creedmoor Barreled Action?

A barreled action is the core of a bolt-action rifle: the action (receiver), bolt, and barrel assembled together. The Faxon FX7 6.5 Creedmoor barreled action includes the FX7 short action, the complete FX7 bolt assembly, and a 24" 6.5 Creedmoor M24-profile barrel — all factory-assembled and headspaced before shipment. This is not a complete rifle; you will still need a trigger, stock or chassis, and magazine to complete your build.

The FX7 action is machined from 416 stainless steel and finished with ArmorLube™ Matte DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) — the mil-spec coating designated MIL-PRF-32711. The bolt is machined from 4340 carbon steel with the same ArmorLube™ treatment and features Faxon’s signature flame fluting, an M16-style extractor (S7 tool steel), a plunger-style ejector, and a 17-4 PH stainless steel firing pin heat-treated to H900 condition. The six-lug bolt design (two rings of three) provides a 70-degree throw for faster cycling and greater clearance under low-mounted optics.

The 24" barrel is machined from 416R stainless steel in the M24 contour — a heavy profile derived from the military M24 Sniper Weapon System that concentrates mass along the full barrel length for maximum rigidity and thermal stability during sustained fire. The bore is 5R button-rifled with a 1:8" twist rate (right-hand), then honed and lapped to a smooth finish. A 1:8 twist stabilizes the 130–147 grain match-grade bullets that make 6.5 Creedmoor a dominant precision cartridge. The barrel is finished with salt bath nitride for additional corrosion resistance and is magnetic particle inspected (MPI). Muzzle threads are 5/8x24 UNEF for common muzzle devices and suppressor mounts, with a recessed target crown.

Every FX7 receiver includes an integrated 20-MOA Picatinny rail and an integrated recoil lug. The FX7 barreled action is built on the Remington® 700 short-action footprint for compatibility with Rem 700 triggers (TriggerTech, Timney, Bix’n Andy), stocks and chassis (KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR, Manners, McMillan), and AICS/AW pattern magazines.

Why Choose a 24" 6.5 Creedmoor M24 Profile?

The M24 is a heavy barrel contour derived from the military M24 Sniper Weapon System. It concentrates more material along the full barrel length than a standard or Gunner profile, providing greater rigidity and significantly better heat dissipation during extended shot strings. Where a lighter-contour barrel may shift point of impact as the barrel heats up, the M24 profile resists thermal drift and maintains consistent accuracy from a cold bore through sustained fire — making it the preferred choice for precision competition, long-range target shooting, and bench or prone applications where weight is secondary to repeatability.

At 24 inches, this barrel extracts maximum practical velocity from the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge. The 6.5 CM reaches its velocity plateau near 24–26 inches, making this the ideal length for shooters who want every bit of ballistic performance without unnecessary barrel length. The 1:8" twist rate stabilizes the full range of match-grade 6.5mm projectiles from 120 to 147 grains — including popular choices like the 140-grain Hornady ELD Match, 147-grain Hornady ELD-M, and 130-grain Berger Hybrid Target. Combined with 5R rifling and a honed, lapped bore, the 24" M24-profile barrel is built for shooters who prioritize precision above all else.

Engineering Highlights

The FX7 action uses a 22-item bill of materials across the bolt assembly, receiver assembly, and barrel. Every component is inspected in-process per Faxon’s MBR (Manufacturing Build Record) protocol — from initial blank turning through bore drilling, reaming, honing, button rifling, OD profiling, chambering, threading, nitride coating, and final assembly. The barrel bore is inspected at multiple stages by air gage, profilometer, and borescope to verify bore diameter (.2575" ±.001"), rifling groove diameter (.2655" ±.001"), and surface finish (no tool marks, reamer marks, or gouges). The chamber is cut to 6.5 Creedmoor GO gage headspace (.883" +.0005/-.0010") and verified by borescope for alignment, groove condition, and crown finish before the barreled action is packaged.

During final assembly, the bolt interior is greased, firing pin travel is verified without spring, the ejector and extractor are confirmed for smooth function, the bolt handle is secured with red Loctite, and the firing pin screw is secured with blue Loctite. The action bore and bolt body are oiled, smooth operation is confirmed within the receiver, and the barrel is torqued to 65 ft-lbs with headspace verified. The completed barreled action passes a final multi-point inspection covering threads, headspace, crown, chamber, laser engraving, and overall cosmetics before packaging.

Faxon offers the FX7 Action Wrench for barrel installation and removal. Always follow proper installation procedures and verify headspace when changing barrels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 6.5 Creedmoor barreled action?

A barreled action is the core of a bolt-action rifle: the action (receiver), bolt, and barrel assembled together. The Faxon FX7 6.5 Creedmoor barreled action includes the complete FX7 bolt and a 24-inch M24-profile 6.5 Creedmoor barrel, factory-installed and headspaced. It is not a complete rifle — you still need a trigger, stock or chassis, and magazine.

What is the advantage of an M24 barrel profile?

The M24 is a heavy barrel contour derived from the military M24 Sniper Weapon System. It concentrates more mass along the barrel’s full length compared to lighter profiles like Gunner or Sporter, which increases rigidity and improves heat dissipation. This means the barrel resists thermal drift — maintaining consistent point of impact during sustained strings of fire. The M24 profile is ideal for precision competition, long-range target shooting, and bench or prone applications where consistent accuracy matters more than low weight.

Why a 1:8 twist for 6.5 Creedmoor?

A 1:8-inch twist rate stabilizes the full range of match-grade 6.5mm projectiles from 120 to 147 grains, including popular choices like the 140-grain Hornady ELD Match and 147-grain Hornady ELD-M. The 1:8 twist provides enough spin for heavy, high-BC bullets at 6.5 Creedmoor velocities without over-stabilizing lighter projectiles, making it the most versatile twist rate for the cartridge.

Does this FX7 barreled action include the bolt?

Yes. Every Faxon FX7 barreled action includes the complete bolt assembly — 4340 carbon steel bolt body with flame fluting, M16-style extractor, plunger ejector, firing pin, cocking piece, bolt shroud, bolt handle, and all springs and pins.

Is headspace set and verified before shipping?

Yes. FX7 barreled actions are headspaced and verified in-house at Faxon before shipment. The barrel is torqued to 65 ft-lbs and headspace is checked with a 6.5 Creedmoor GO gage.

What is ArmorLube™ DLC?

ArmorLube is the mil-spec Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating designated MIL-PRF-32711 (DEVCON standard). It is a PVD-applied coating that increases surface hardness, reduces friction, and improves corrosion resistance. The ArmorLube Matte DLC finish provides a satin, low-glare appearance suited for field, hunting, and tactical applications.

Is this compatible with Remington® 700 short-action stocks and chassis?

Yes. The FX7 uses a Remington 700 short-action footprint and is compatible with aftermarket stocks and chassis systems from KRG, MDT, Magpul, XLR, Manners, McMillan, and others. Some stocks may require minor inletting to accommodate the FX7 trigger hanger. Verify that your stock or chassis barrel channel can accommodate the heavier M24 barrel contour.

What is 5R rifling?

5R rifling is a five-groove rifling pattern where the lands (raised portions) are offset opposite each groove rather than directly across from each other. This asymmetric design reduces bullet deformation during engraving, which can improve accuracy and make the bore easier to clean. The FX7 6.5 Creedmoor barrel uses 5R button rifling with a 1:8-inch twist rate.

Is this barreled action suppressor-ready?

Yes. The barrel is threaded 5/8x24 UNEF to accept common muzzle devices and suppressor mounts. Always verify suppressor and mount compatibility before installation.

Can I swap to a different FX7 barrel later?

Yes. The FX7 is designed for user-serviceable barrel changes. FX7 Prefit barrels are headspaced at the factory and thread directly onto the receiver — no gunsmith required. The FX7 is also compatible with RemAge-style barrels and profiled barrel blanks for custom gunsmith work. Faxon sells an FX7 Action Wrench for barrel installation and removal. Always verify headspace when changing barrels.

Is this a complete rifle?

No. This product is a barreled action (receiver + bolt + installed barrel). You will need a Remington 700-pattern trigger, a compatible stock or chassis, a magazine, and a scope to complete a rifle build.
