What Is the Faxon FX7 Polished DLC 8.6 Blackout Barreled Action?

A barreled action is the core of a bolt-action rifle: the receiver, the bolt, and the barrel, assembled and headspaced as a unit. This one pairs the Faxon FX7 short action and complete bolt — both finished in high-polish DLC — with a 16-inch Medium Sporter 8.6 Blackout barrel in 416R stainless, 5R button rifled at the original 1:3 twist. It is built for a suppressed bolt gun that runs 210–300+ grain subsonic loads with authority and still stretches out on supersonics when you want it to. It is a serialized firearm and ships to an FFL.

Mechanically it is identical to the FX7 Matte DLC 16" 8.6 BLK barreled action: same receiver, same six-lug 70° bolt, same barrel, same threads, same inspection. The difference is the finish: the matte version wears ArmorLube™ Matte DLC; this version wears a high-polish DLC, which changes both how it looks and how the bolt feels in the raceway.

It is not a complete rifle. To finish the build you add a Remington® 700-pattern trigger, a Rem 700 short-action stock or chassis, and an AICS or AW pattern magazine. Use the Faxon Bolt Action Builder to spec the rest.

The Finish

Polished DLC vs. Matte DLC

DLC (diamond-like carbon) is a thin-film coating applied to the FX7 action and bolt for hardness, corrosion resistance, and low friction. Faxon offers the FX7 in two DLC finishes. The matte version wears ArmorLube™ Matte DLC (MIL-PRF-32711), a uniform satin black that hides handling marks and doesn’t reflect. This version wears a high-polish DLC that comes out as a deep, wet-looking gloss black.

The practical difference is in the bolt. DLC is already one of the lowest-friction coatings available, and the polished finish removes the last bit of texture from the raceway and bolt body, so the bolt cycles with a smoother, glassier feel out of the box. The polished surface also sheds carbon and cleans up with a wipe. The trade-off is cosmetic: a gloss finish shows fingerprints and light scuffs more readily than matte, and it is reflective in direct light. If you want a working finish that disappears, choose matte. If you want the smoothest possible bolt and a finish that looks the part on a custom build, this is the one.

Why Choose a 16" 8.6 Blackout Medium Sporter?

Sixteen inches is the shortest barrel that builds into a standard rifle with no tax stamp and no SBR paperwork. On 8.6 Blackout that length does more than keep the ATF happy: subsonic loads reach full velocity well short of 16 inches, and supersonic loads pick up meaningful speed over a 12-inch barrel, so a 16-inch gun is the one that does both jobs. The Medium Sporter profile keeps weight where you want it — stiff enough to hold zero with a suppressor hanging off the muzzle, light enough that the finished rifle carries like a hunting gun rather than a bench gun.

8.6 Blackout Cartridge Overview

8.6 Blackout was developed by Q LLC and Kevin Brittingham as a large-bore suppressed cartridge for AR-10 and .308-bolt-face platforms. It fires 210–300+ grain .338-caliber bullets from a .308 Winchester parent case shortened to fit short-action magazines. At subsonic velocities (under 1,050 fps) kinetic energy is inherently limited, so the cartridge gets its terminal performance from rotational energy instead: the 1:3 twist spins the bullet fast enough that it yaws and fragments aggressively on impact, producing wound channels a slower-twist barrel cannot match at the same velocity.

This barrel is chambered in original-spec 8.6 Blackout with the 1:3 twist. Faxon was the first company to commercially produce 1:3 twist 8.6 BLK barrels via button rifling. For shooters who prefer the SAAMI standardized version (1:6 twist, same chamber), Faxon offers FX7 Prefit barrels in 8.6 BLK SAAMI.

Engineering Highlights

The barrel goes through eleven operations from blank to finished tube: initial blank turning, bore drilling, reaming, honing, button rifling, OD profiling, breech threading, muzzle threading, chambering, nitride, and laser engraving. Bore and groove dimensions are verified by air gage, surface finish by profilometer, and the bore is borescoped before the barrel is accepted. Every barrel is magnetic particle inspected.

The action and bolt are finished in high-polish DLC. Lug engagement surfaces, threads, and critical dimensions are identical to the ArmorLube™ Matte DLC version; only the finish differs.

Assembly is done in-house: the barrel is threaded onto the action, torqued to 65 ft-lbs, and headspace is confirmed with an 8.6 BLK GO gage at .8830". The finished barreled action is function-checked before it ships.

Muzzle Threads & Suppressor Compatibility

M18×1.5 — Built to Be Suppressed

The muzzle is threaded M18×1.5 RH with a tapered shoulder — the 8.6 Blackout standard, not the 5/8x24 found on .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrels. A taper adapter is in the box. Any suppressor rated for .338 caliber or larger works; Faxon’s Harmonix® Sentry, Harmonix® ION, and CoreSync® are rated to .36 caliber and cover 8.6 BLK. Faxon also offers M18×1.5 MuzzLok® brakes, Plan B muzzle devices, and direct-thread hub adapters.

Barrel Swap Capability

The FX7 is built for user-serviceable barrel changes. FX7 Prefit barrels are headspaced at the factory and thread directly onto the receiver; the action is also compatible with RemAge-style barrels and profiled barrel blanks. Ammunition Advisory

8.6 Blackout is a relatively new cartridge, and commercially available ammunition varies in dimensional consistency across manufacturers. Some factory loads may not chamber, feed, or extract reliably in every 8.6 BLK firearm. This is not a defect of the barrel or action — it reflects the current state of ammunition standardization in the 8.6 BLK market. If a load will not chamber, try a different manufacturer before contacting support.
