Folding LR Rear Sight • M1913 Picatinny • Case-Hardened Steel Melonite • Made in USA
MAGPUL MBUS PRO LR REAR SIGHT — MAG527BLK
The Magpul MBUS Pro LR Rear Sight is a folding, long-range-capable rear sight built for Picatinny-railed AR-15 platform rifles. Machined from case-hardened steel and finished in a corrosion-resistant Melonite treatment, it is built to the same exacting standard as the rest of the MBUS Pro line — purpose-designed for shooters who want a rugged, fully adjustable iron sight that performs equally well as a primary sight system or a backup behind a red dot or magnified optic.
The defining capability of the LR model is its elevation adjustment wheel, which provides calibrated adjustments for distances from 200 to 600 meters. Most folding BUIS offer only a fixed or minimally adjustable rear elevation — the MBUS Pro LR gives you a genuine long-range capability from a folding iron sight, without requiring a separate elevation tool. Windage adjustment is also tool-less, hand-operable at the range without removing the sight from the rifle.
Two apertures are built into the rear sight body to cover different shooting conditions. The small 0.07" aperture provides a precise, focused sight picture for longer distances and well-lit conditions where fine aiming is possible. The large 0.19" aperture opens the sight picture for low-light environments, fast close-range target acquisition, and CQB applications where speed matters more than fine precision. Switching between them is fast and intuitive.
Both the stowed and deployed positions are locked by positive detents, holding the sight firmly upright under recoil and flat when carried. At standard AR sight height when deployed and just 0.49" tall when folded, the MBUS Pro LR integrates cleanly with standard optic mounts and keeps a low profile when not in use. It is designed to pair with the Magpul MBUS Pro Hooded Front Sight for a matched, precision-capable iron sight system.
✔ Best for: AR-15 shooters who want a long-range-capable folding rear sight with field-adjustable elevation for 200–600m shooting. Ideal as a primary sight paired with the MBUS Pro Hooded Front Sight, or as a co-witness backup behind a red dot or LPVO. Also well-suited for precision-oriented competition builds and dual-aperture versatility.
✘ Not for: Buyers who need a complete front-and-rear sight set — this is the rear sight only. Rifles without a Picatinny top rail require a rail section adapter. Not the right choice for shooters who only need a basic fixed-zero BUIS with no range adjustment capability.
ℹ Note: Designed to pair with the Magpul MBUS Pro Hooded Front Sight (sold separately). Co-witness height compatibility with your specific optic and mount should be verified before purchase.
Key Features
- 200–600 Meter Elevation Adjustment Wheel — The LR designation sets this sight apart from standard BUIS: a calibrated elevation wheel provides repeatable adjustments for 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 meter distances. Most folding rear sights offer no meaningful elevation range adjustment. The MBUS Pro LR gives you genuine long-range iron sight capability in a folding, Picatinny-mount package.
- Tool-Less Windage Adjustment — Windage is adjusted by hand at the range — no tools required. Dial in your left/right zero, and the adjustment holds its position under normal use and recoil. Combined with the elevation wheel, the MBUS Pro LR offers complete, tool-free adjustability in the field.
- Dual Apertures for Variable Conditions — Two apertures are built into the rear sight: a small 0.07" aperture for precise target acquisition at distance and in bright light, and a large 0.19" aperture for fast acquisition in low-light conditions or close-range applications. Switching between them takes a fraction of a second without breaking your shooting position.
- Case-Hardened Steel with Melonite Finish — Case-hardened steel provides a harder, more impact-resistant surface than standard steel. The Melonite finish adds a further layer of corrosion resistance and surface hardness by treating the steel at the molecular level rather than applying a surface coating. The result is a sight that holds up through hard use, weather exposure, and repeated deployment cycles.
- Positive Detents in Both Positions — The sight locks firmly upright under recoil and flat when stowed. Positive detents in both positions prevent unintended deployment or collapse, keeping the sight where you put it throughout a range session or in the field.
- Standard AR Sight Height — Co-Witness Ready — Deployed to standard AR sight height, the MBUS Pro LR is compatible with most front sights at standard height — including gas blocks with integrated front sights — and co-witnesses with red dot sights on standard Picatinny mounts.
- Low 0.49" Stowed Profile — When folded, the sight collapses to a 0.49" stowed height, clearing the field of view for a primary optic and minimizing snag points during carry and handling.
- Made in the USA — Designed and manufactured in the United States by Magpul Industries.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MAG527BLK a complete sight set, or just the rear sight?
This is the rear sight only. The MAG527BLK does not include a front sight. For a matched system, it is designed to pair with the Magpul MBUS Pro Hooded Front Sight, sold separately. If you need both front and rear sights, add the MBUS Pro Hooded Front Sight to your order as well.
What does the "LR" designation mean, and how does the elevation wheel work?
LR stands for Long Range. The standard MBUS Pro Rear Sight offers a fixed or minimally adjustable rear elevation. The LR version adds a calibrated elevation adjustment wheel that provides repeatable settings for 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 meter distances — giving you genuine long-range iron sight capability from a folding, Picatinny-mount rear sight. Turn the wheel to your desired distance setting at the range. Windage is adjusted separately via a tool-less windage adjustment. No tools are required for either adjustment.
What are the two apertures, and when should I use each one?
The MBUS Pro LR features two apertures built into the rear sight body. The small 0.07" aperture provides a narrow, focused sight picture that is ideal for longer-range shooting in good light, where a precise aiming reference is more valuable than a wide field of view. The large 0.19" aperture opens the sight picture for faster target acquisition, and is better suited for low-light conditions, close-quarters applications, or any situation where speed of acquisition outweighs fine precision. Switching between them is quick and requires no tools.
What is Melonite finish, and how does it compare to standard black anodize?
Melonite (also known as Tenifer or by the process name ferritic nitrocarburizing) is a surface hardening treatment applied directly to the steel. Unlike anodize, which is a surface coating on aluminum, or standard bluing, which is a thin oxide layer, Melonite penetrates into the steel and increases its surface hardness and corrosion resistance at the molecular level. The result is a finish that is significantly harder and more corrosion-resistant than standard black oxide or bluing, and which does not chip or peel because it is part of the steel itself rather than a layer on top of it.
Will this rear sight co-witness with my red dot optic?
The MBUS Pro LR deploys to standard AR sight height, which provides absolute co-witness with most red dot sights on standard-height Picatinny mounts. If your optic is on a lower-third co-witness riser or an elevated mount, the relationship will differ. The correct co-witness setup depends on your specific optic and mount height. Verify the deployed sight height against your mount specs before purchasing if co-witness is a requirement.
Is the MBUS Pro LR compatible with front sights other than the Magpul MBUS Pro?
Yes. The MBUS Pro LR deploys to standard AR sight height and is compatible with most front sights at standard AR sight height — including other manufacturers' Picatinny-mount folding front sights and gas blocks with integrated front sights. Magpul designed it to pair specifically with the MBUS Pro Hooded Front Sight for the best-matched system, but it will function with other standard-height front sights as well.
Is the Magpul MBUS Pro LR Rear Sight made in the USA?
Yes. The MBUS Pro LR Rear Sight is designed and manufactured in the United States by Magpul Industries.
