Geissele Automatics Airborne Charging Handle Black (05497B) — ambidextrous AR-15 charging handle 3D machined from solid 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum with dual-contoured levers, checkered grip surface, gas-mitigating raised rear lip, and Type III hardcoat anodize finish. AR-15 Charging Handle • Ambidextrous • 7075-T6 Aluminum

GEISSELE AIRBORNE CHARGING HANDLE BLACK — 05497B

Ambidextrous 7075-T6 Aluminum Type III Hardcoat Anodize Short Latch Gas-Mitigating Rear Lip AR-15 / M16 / M4 Low-Profile Levers 0.15 lb

The Geissele Automatics Airborne Charging Handle (05497B) is 3D machined from a solid block of aircraft-grade 7075-T6 aluminum—the same alloy used in aerospace and high-stress structural applications—giving the Airborne a strength-to-weight ratio that a cast or MIM part simply can’t match. Every geometry on the handle is CNC machined rather than formed, keeping tolerances tight and surfaces consistent from the first unit to the last.

The lever design takes its cues from the M14 charging handle: instead of a single-plane latch, the Airborne uses dual-contoured levers with radius cuts on both the x- and y-axis. The result is a handle that seats naturally in the hand regardless of approach angle, and the checkered lever surface provides a positive, non-slip grip even with gloved hands or in wet conditions. Either lever can be used independently for a true ambidextrous operation without a separate kit or modification.

The raised rear lip addresses one of the practical annoyances of suppressed and short-barreled AR-15 builds: excess gas venting rearward through the charging handle channel. The Airborne’s heightened lip deflects that gas away from the shooter’s face and eyes, making it a natural pairing for any suppressed or SBR configuration. Meanwhile, the low-profile lever geometry minimizes the footprint that can catch on chest rigs, magazine pouches, and sling hardware during movement. All components are finished in Type III hardcoat anodize for wear and corrosion resistance.

✔ Best for: Suppressed AR-15 builds, SBR configurations, ambidextrous or left-handed shooters, tactical and duty use, gloved operation.

✘ Not for: AR-10 / LR-308 / SR-25 platforms (AR-15 only); shooters who need a large-latch handle for single-handed extended charging.

✏ Note: Verify local and federal regulations before configuring a short-barreled rifle. SBR ownership requires NFA compliance.

Key Features

  • 3D Machined from Solid Billet — The Airborne is CNC machined from a single block of 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, not cast or MIM. Tighter tolerances and no structural weak points from a parting line or casting seam.
  • Ambidextrous Dual-Contoured Levers — Radius cuts on both the x- and y-axis give the levers a natural, ergonomic shape for either hand. Inspired by the M14 charging handle geometry, each lever operates independently for true ambi function without adapter kits.
  • Checkered Lever Surface — The handling surface of each lever is checkered to provide a positive grip under recoil and during manipulation, including when wearing tactical gloves.
  • Gas-Mitigating Raised Rear Lip — The heightened rear lip deflects gas that vents rearward through the charging handle channel—a common issue on suppressed builds and short-barreled AR-15s. Reduces gas exposure to the shooter’s face and eyes during cyclic fire.
  • Low-Profile Lever Design — The levers sit closer to the receiver profile than a standard mil-spec handle, reducing the chance of catching on sling hardware, chest rig straps, and magazine pouches during movement.
  • Type III Hardcoat Anodize — All components are finished to MIL-SPEC Type III hardcoat anodize specification for maximum surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion protection.

Bill of Materials — What’s In the Box

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Airborne different from a standard mil-spec charging handle?

A standard mil-spec charging handle is typically aluminum or polymer with a simple stamped or cast latch, a flat lever surface, and no gas mitigation geometry. The Geissele Airborne upgrades every one of those points: it is 3D machined from a solid block of 7075-T6 billet aluminum (no casting porosity, no MIM tolerances), the levers are dual-contoured for ergonomic fit in the hand, the surfaces are checkered for grip, the rear lip is raised to deflect gas, and the lever profile is kept low to reduce snagging. It is a direct drop-in replacement that installs with no modification to the upper receiver.

Is the Airborne truly ambidextrous, or does it just have a latch on both sides?

Truly ambidextrous. The Airborne has full levers on both sides of the handle—not a small secondary latch—and each lever is independently functional. A left-handed shooter can run the handle entirely from the left side; a right-handed shooter from the right. The dual-contoured shape means both levers have the same ergonomic profile and checkered grip surface, so there is no “primary” side with a better feel.

What are “dual-contoured” levers, and why does it matter?

A standard charging handle lever is typically contoured on only one axis—it curves inward or outward along its length, but is essentially flat in the perpendicular direction. The Airborne’s dual-contoured levers receive radius cuts on both the x-axis and the y-axis, creating a shape similar to the M14 charging handle. The result is a lever that fits the natural grip of the hand from any approach angle—palm-bladed from the side or pulled straight rearward—and seats more positively under the fingertips when wearing gloves.

Does the raised rear lip actually reduce gas blowback on suppressed builds?

Yes, in practice. On suppressed and short-barreled AR-15s, elevated backpressure causes gas to vent rearward through the charging handle channel and into the shooter’s face. The Airborne’s raised rear lip acts as a barrier that deflects this gas downward and away from the shooter. It does not eliminate all gas—that depends on suppressor design, dwell time, and buffer/spring tuning—but it meaningfully reduces direct eye and face exposure compared to a flat-backed mil-spec handle.

Will the Airborne fit my AR-10 or .308 build?

No. The Geissele Airborne (05497B) is sized for the AR-15 / M16 / M4 charging handle channel only. AR-10, LR-308, and SR-25 pattern uppers use a wider charging handle channel and require a .308-specific handle. Confirm your platform before ordering.

What latch size does the Airborne use?

The Airborne 05497B uses a short latch. The latch engages the standard AR-15 upper receiver notch and provides reliable retention under normal cycling. Shooters who need extended single-hand leverage—such as those running a wrist brace or requiring a larger latch surface for one-handed manipulation—should verify that a short latch meets their use case before purchasing.

How durable is the Type III hardcoat anodize finish?

Type III hardcoat anodize is the highest standard grade of anodize finish used on aluminum components, specified by MIL-A-8625 Type III. It builds a hard aluminum oxide layer into the surface of the metal—not just a coating applied on top—resulting in a surface hardness of approximately 60–70 Rockwell C. It is significantly more wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant than standard Type II anodize, and it is the same finish specification used on mil-spec upper and lower receivers. In normal service on a charging handle, a Type III finish will outlast the life of the firearm.
