XS Sights notes from their own testing that yellow photoluminescent material glows more intensely in low-light conditions than orange, while orange tends to be more visible in bright daylight. This is partly a function of how the eye perceives wavelengths under varying light levels. In photopic (daylight) vision, the eye is most sensitive to warm colors including orange; in scotopic (low-light) vision, the eye shifts toward higher sensitivity in the yellow-green range of the spectrum. The result is that yellow photoluminescent glow is more easily detected by the eye in low-light conditions, while orange provides stronger daylight contrast. For a defensive pistol used primarily in low-light scenarios, yellow provides a meaningful visibility advantage. The Glow Dot is XS Sights' proprietary photoluminescent front sight element. Photoluminescent materials absorb energy from ambient and UV light during normal conditions and re-emit that stored energy as visible light when surrounding light levels drop. The DXW2 front sight charges passively during everyday carry and glows yellow in low-light conditions without batteries or manual activation. The Glow Dot is convex rather than flat, increasing surface area and therefore the rate and intensity of light absorption. It works alongside the tritium insert: tritium provides constant always-on glow, while the Glow Dot provides an additional yellow glow that is brightest immediately after light exposure and fades until recharged. Both sources operate simultaneously in low-light conditions.

The "dot the i" aiming system is XS Sights' simplified sight picture for defensive shooting. Rather than aligning three dots in a row as with a traditional three-dot setup, the shooter places the large front dot above the point of the V-shaped rear notch — like placing a dot on top of the letter i. This requires tracking one visual reference instead of aligning three, which is faster and less cognitively demanding under the stress of a defensive situation. The DXW2 has an overall sight height of 0.250 inches, which is a low-profile dimension designed to fit within standard holster tolerances. As with any sight change on a form-fitted or retention holster, it is worth confirming fit with your holster manufacturer, as those designs are built around the profile of the factory sights. For most standard holsters, the DXW2's 0.250-inch height should present no issues. Open-top holsters are generally not affected by sight height changes.

Tritium is a radioactive isotope with a half-life of approximately 12.3 years. Night sight inserts are brightest when new and gradually dim as the tritium decays. After roughly 12 years, the inserts will be at approximately half their original brightness — still visible in low-light conditions but noticeably dimmer than new. Tritium does not require battery replacement; XS Sights offers factory tritium replacement service when brightness becomes unacceptable. The photoluminescent Glow Dot does not degrade on this timescale and will continue to function at full effectiveness throughout the tritium service life and beyond.
