Faxon Duty Series 7.5″ SOCOM 5.56 NATO AR-15 Barrel

4150 CMV  |  QPQ Nitride  |  1:8 Twist  |  0.89 lb  |  SKU: 15A58P7NSQ

This is the shortest 5.56 barrel Faxon makes, built for the gun that gets shot hardest for its size. Seven and a half inches puts everything that happens in a 5.56 into a gun that fits in a backpack, and the SOCOM profile answers it with steel where the heat lives: a .850″ step at the gas block and a full .730″ section ahead of it to the muzzle, in a barrel that still weighs 0.89 lb. Pistol-length gas with a metered .063″ port is the only system that fits, and owners report a barrel that hits man-sized steel at 250 yards with M193 from a pistol. It is machined from 4150 CMV in Greater Cincinnati, button rifled 1:8, salt-bath nitrided inside and out, and shipped with its M4 extension installed and headspaced. Voted Favorite Aftermarket Barrel by Shooting Sports Retailer every year since 2022 — the Gold Award, the top honor in the category.

SOCOM PROFILE

Heavy where a 7.5″ gets hot: a .850″ step at the block and a full .730″ ahead of it to the muzzle. 0.89 lb.

4150 CMV, NITRIDED

The M4/M16 barrel alloy, QPQ nitrided inside and out for hardness and corrosion resistance with no plating in the bore.

PISTOL-LENGTH GAS

The only system that fits a 7.5″: port 4.6″ from the breech, three inches of dwell. A small .063″ port meters the high pressure. .750″ journal.

HEADSPACED & READY

M4-ramp extension torqued to 150 ft-lb, pinned, and checked with a 5.56 go/no-go gauge. 1/2x28 muzzle.

Why a 7.5″ SOCOM

A 7.5″ 5.56 is a specialist. It is the barrel for a truck gun, a bag gun, a home-defense pistol that has to move through doorways, or a suppressed SBR that needs to stay short with the can on, and it gives up velocity to get there: about 2,400 fps with 55 gr, roughly 700 fps behind a 16″. What it does not have to give up is accuracy or durability. The bore, the chamber, the rifling, and the crown are the same as Faxon’s 16″ barrels, so it groups like one inside the range the cartridge is good for, and the two owners who have written the most about this barrel both report hitting a silhouette at 250 yards every shot. Pick ammunition made for short barrels, bullets that do not depend on fragmentation velocity to work, and it is a serious gun.

The SOCOM profile is the right one for a barrel this short because a 7.5″ burns all of its powder in the bore and none of it in the air ahead of the muzzle, so it heats faster per shot than any longer barrel, and pistol-length gas taps the bore where pressure is highest. Faxon keeps a .850″ step at the gas block and a full .730″ section from the block to the muzzle, where a Pencil would be .500″, so the front of the barrel has the mass to soak heat and the stiffness to hold a crown square through fast strings. Behind the block, where a 7.5″ sees no handguard load to speak of, the body runs .675″, which is why the whole barrel weighs under a pound. For the same length with a lighter forward section, the 7.5″ 300 BLK Gunner is the suppressed-subsonic answer; for three more inches of barrel and 300 more fps, the 10.5″ SOCOM is the Mk18 recipe.

What “Duty Series” Means

Duty Series is Faxon’s 4150 CMV line: the M4/M16 barrel alloy, salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside and out. 4150 carries about 0.50% carbon plus vanadium, which gives it more strength and wear resistance at temperature than 4140, and nitride adds a hard, corrosion-resistant surface to the bore and exterior without plating anything, and it adds virtually nothing to the surface: a few ten-thousandths of an inch, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair. It is the right combination for a barrel that will be shot hard, carried in the weather, and cleaned when there is time. Faxon’s stainless Match Series is the option when you want the precision-barrel formula; the Duty Series is the one to reach for when the rifle has a job.

Fitment

Upper receiver Any mil-spec AR-15 upper; M4 feed ramps match a ramped upper and work with a non-ramped one
Bolt carrier group Standard 5.56/.223 AR-15 BCG: Faxon 5.56 Gunner Lightweight BCG or 5.56 M16 BCG; bolt only: 9310 5.56 bolt
Gas block .750″ low-profile: adjustable or fixed
Gas tube Pistol-length: Faxon 304 stainless pistol-length gas tube
Handguard Any free-float rail 6″ or longer that clears a .850″ step and a low-profile block; the block sits about 3″ to 5″ from the receiver face and the muzzle about 6.2″; the Streamline 6″ M-LOK runs to the muzzle so the device threads on inside the end of the rail, and the 7″ shrouds the base of the device, which keeps some of the blast off your support hand

Ammunition 55 to 77 gr; 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington

Bore, groove, journal, and port figures are from the Faxon engineering print and inspection sheets for this SKU.

How It’s Made

Every Duty Series barrel is made start to finish in Faxon’s Greater Cincinnati plant, on Faxon’s machines, to Faxon’s prints. This is the routing for this barrel.

  1. Drill and pull-ream 4150 CMV bar is gun-drilled, then pull-reamed from the chamber end to a .2195″ bore held to ±.001″, with a 32 Ra maximum finish checked on a profilometer and a borescope pass for reamer marks.
  2. Button rifle A carbide button is pulled through from the chamber end to form six grooves, right-hand, one turn in 8 inches, to a .2250″ groove diameter. Bore and groove are air-gauged.
  3. Stress relieve and qualify The rifled blank is stress relieved before it becomes a finished barrel, then the OD is qualified true to the bore so every later cut references the same axis.
  4. Turn the SOCOM profile Muzzle end first: the .750″ gas journal is turned to .7490–.7500″ and checked with a micrometer on every barrel, held within .005″ of the bore, the .730″ forward section is turned true to the same axis, and the 1/2x28 muzzle is threaded and crowned. Then the breech end: the .675″ body, the .850″ step, the .980″ chamber journal, and the extension thread.
  5. Chamber The 5.56 NATO chamber is cut and checked with a headspace gauge; chamber surfaces are held to a 20 Ra finish.
  6. MPI and nitride The machined barrel is 100% wet magnetic-particle inspected for surface and near-surface flaws, then salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside the bore and out, hardening the surface while adding virtually nothing to it.
  7. Gas port, extension, pin After nitride, the .063″ gas port is drilled and reamed through the .750″ journal, the M4 extension is torqued to 150 ft-lb and pinned, and the barrel is headspaced with a 5.56 go/no-go gauge.
  8. Mark The Faxon shield and order number are laser-engraved on the chamber journal and “5.56 NATO 1-8T” ahead of the gas block.

AIR-GAUGED

Bore and groove diameters measured with air gauges to ±.001″ after reaming and after rifling.

100% ON THE CRITICALS

Every barrel: gas journal on a micrometer, muzzle thread on a thread gauge, chamber on a headspace gauge, bore on a borescope.

100% WET MPI

Every barrel is wet magnetic particle inspected, the more sensitive method, for surface and near-surface flaws, right before it goes into the nitride bath.

What Reviewers and Owners Say

Voted Favorite Aftermarket Barrel by Shooting Sports Retailer every year since 2022 — the Gold Award, the top honor in the category. Faxon also took the Tactical Retailer Gold Award in the same category in 2025. Here is what independent testers and buyers have said about Faxon barrels and this one.

OPTICSPLANET

Faxon 5.56 Gov’t/SOCOM Barrels: 4.8 stars, 48 reviews ›

OpticsPlanet’s listing pools the SOCOM-profile 5.56 barrels; a 10.5″ SBR owner set out to see what a thousand fast rounds would do to the same profile.

“I wanted to see what would happen after 1,000 rounds rapidly put through this barrel and for the price I was/am impressed.”

BROWNELLS

Faxon 5.56 Gov’t/SOCOM Barrels: 4.6 stars ›

Brownells buyers put the SOCOM barrels on pistol builds; this is a 10.5″ owner on the same profile.

“It’s shorter, lighter, and every bit as accurate as my old barrel was. I am getting shot groups that can be covered with a quarter at 50 yards with a simple EOTech red dot sight.”

SHOOTING SPORTS RETAILER

Gold Award, Favorite Aftermarket Barrel ›

Retailers across the country vote on the barrels they sell and stand behind. Faxon has won the Gold, the top award, every year since 2022, and added the Tactical Retailer Gold in 2025.

“A testament to our team’s dedication to crafting the best barrels on the market.”

“I can hit a man-sized silhouette at 250 yards every shot with M193 out of this barrel. Anyone who tells you a 7.5 isn’t accurate is wrong.”

Verified buyer, FaxonFirearms.com

“It’s an outstanding quality barrel. I have the same pistol and this is the third barrel I’ve had on it, exact same setup each time, and this one holds groups at 250 yards consistently. Great quality, great company.”

Build It Out: Faxon Parts That Fit This Barrel

Everything below is made or specified to the same prints this barrel is, so the gas system, extension, and muzzle line up the first time. Pick one from each row and the upper is done.

BOLT CARRIER GROUP

Standard 5.56 bolt face. The M16 BCG’s full-mass carrier is the right match for a pistol-gas 7.5″: it slows the fast, hard cycle down and runs consistently as the gun fouls. Save the Gunner Lightweight for a longer gun.

GAS BLOCK & TUBE

.750″ block on the 1.9″ journal, pistol-length tube. On a 7.5″ the adjustable block is the one to buy: pistol gas is the system that over-gasses most with a can and the one that changes most between ammunition.

SUPPRESSOR

A 7.5″ 5.56 is the loudest, brightest thing you can build on an AR, and a can is the fix, but pistol gas is the system a suppressor over-gasses most. Buy the adjustable block with the can and turn it down. Faxon 5.56 cans in titanium, Haynes 282, and removable-core.

Duty Series 7.5″ SOCOM 5.56 FAQs

Is this a 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington chamber?

5.56 NATO, headspaced with a 5.56 go/no-go gauge after the extension is installed. A 5.56 chamber has the longer throat that lets it fire both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington safely; the reverse is not true, so a .223-chambered barrel should not be fed 5.56.

Why pistol-length gas on a 7.5″ barrel, and what does it need to run?

Because nothing else fits. A 7.5″ barrel has room for a pistol-length system and no more: the port sits about 4.6″ from the breech with about three inches of barrel past it. That close to the chamber the pressure is high, so Faxon reams the port small, .063″, to meter it, and the system runs with a standard carbine buffer and spring; an H or H2 buffer smooths it if the gun feels fast. Pistol gas on a short barrel is a high-pressure, short-dwell system by nature, which means more gas at the charging handle and a sharper impulse than a longer gun, and it is the system most affected by a suppressor. Run an adjustable block if a can is in the plan. This barrel needs a pistol-length gas tube.

What is the SOCOM profile on a 7.5″ barrel?

On a pistol-length barrel it means mass at the front: a .850″ step at the gas block and a .730″ section from the block to the muzzle, the SOCOM forward diameter, where a Gunner or Pencil tapers to .625″ or .500″. That is where a 7.5″ gets hot and where the crown lives, so it buys heat capacity and point-of-impact stability through fast strings. Behind the block the body runs .675″, so the barrel weighs 0.89 lb. It takes the most common AR gas block, the .750″.

What bullet weights does the 1:8 twist stabilize?

Everything from 55 gr FMJ through 69 and 77 gr match bullets. 1:8 is the most versatile twist for a general-purpose 5.56; 1:7 is only needed for the longest tracer and 80-plus grain projectiles, and 1:9 starts to run out of spin above 69 gr.

What gas block and gas tube does it take?

A .750″ gas block on the 1.9″ journal and a pistol-length gas tube. Faxon makes a .750″ adjustable and a .750″ fixed low-profile block, and a 304 stainless pistol-length gas tube. The gas port is reamed to .063″.

What does 4150 CMV mean?

Chrome-moly-vanadium steel with about 0.50% carbon, the alloy the M4 and M16 barrel specification calls for. The higher carbon and the vanadium give it more strength and wear resistance at temperature than 4140, which matters most on a barrel that will see fast strings and sustained fire.

Is the nitride inside the bore?

Yes. Salt-bath QPQ nitride is a diffusion treatment, not a plating, so it hardens the surface of the bore and the exterior while adding virtually nothing to it: the surface grows by a few ten-thousandths of an inch, .0002–.0004″, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair or about the diameter of a single red blood cell. It also gives the barrel its corrosion resistance and matte black finish.

Does it come with a gas block, gas tube, or muzzle device?

No. It ships with the black-oxide M4 extension installed, torqued, pinned, and headspaced. Gas block, gas tube, and muzzle device are sold separately; the muzzle is threaded 1/2x28.

Will it work with a suppressor?

Yes. The 1/2x28 muzzle takes any 5.56 direct-thread can or mount, and a 7.5″ is the barrel that needs one most and tolerates one least: the can turns the blast into something you can shoot indoors with ear protection, and the pistol-gas system will run hard and dirty until you turn the gas down. For a gun that runs suppressed most of the time, pair it with the Faxon .750″ adjustable gas block so you can bring the gas down.

Can I put a 7.5″ barrel on my AR?

A barrel under 16″ makes the firearm either a pistol or a short-barreled rifle under federal law. Build it on a lower that has only ever been a pistol, or on a lower registered as an SBR with an approved Form 1 or Form 4, and check your state law before you buy. Faxon cannot advise on your specific configuration.

How fast does 5.56 leave a 7.5″ barrel, and what ammunition should I run?

Roughly 2,350 to 2,450 fps with 55 gr and 2,250 to 2,350 with 62 gr, depending on the load, or about 700 fps less than a 16″. That is the honest trade of a 7.5″: M193 and M855 leave the muzzle below the velocity they need to fragment, so pick bullets that do their work without it. Bonded and solid-copper loads in 62 to 77 gr, and the heavy open-tip match loads built for short barrels, expand at 7.5″ velocities out to 100 yards and beyond, and that is the range a 7.5″ is built for.

What muzzle device should I run on a 7.5″?

A flash hider or a suppressor, never a bare muzzle and not a brake. A 7.5″ 5.56 throws a fireball and a wall of concussion that a brake makes worse for everyone on the line; the MuzzLok flash hider tames the flash and doubles as a suppressor mount, a linear compensator like the Rowdy Pineapple sends the blast forward, and a suppressor solves both problems at once.

Is the gas journal dimpled for set screws?

No. The journal ships round so any .750″ low-profile, clamp-on, or pinned gas block fits the 1.9″ journal. A set-screw block holds on the nitrided journal when its screws are torqued with thread locker; if you want dimples, mark them through the block’s screw holes and drill.

Posted by Alex Hampton on Jun 3rd 2020

It’s an outstanding quality barrel. I have the same pistol and this is the third barrel I’ve had on it. Exact same set up each time, but this one is holding a 1.5” diameter group at 250 yards pretty consistently. Great quality, great company, look forward to more builds using Faxon parts in the future!
