What Is the Faxon ION-X Hyperlite?
The Faxon ION-X Hyperlite is a complete 16-inch 5.56 NATO AR-15 rifle built around weight reduction at every component, with a finished weight of 4.93 pounds. It is part of Faxon’s ION line of production ultralight rifles and is purpose-built for competitive shooters, action-gun athletes, and high-round-count trainers who want the responsive handling and soft recoil of a tuned lightweight rifle without paying custom-shop pricing for it.
Every major component is a Faxon part or a Faxon-selected upgrade: the X-Tra Lite forged receiver set, the 16" 4150 CMV 1:8 pencil profile barrel, the slim .620" 3-port muzzle brake, the 13" carbon fiber M-LOK handguard, the Gunner lightweight M16 bolt carrier group with Superfinish, the patented 14-position adjustable gas block, and the Faxon Enhanced Match Trigger by Schmid®. Ambidextrous charging handle and safety, a minimalist stock, and a carbine buffer tuned to the ION-X gas profile round out the build. The rifle ships as a complete, test-fired firearm and must be transferred through an FFL.
The rifle is chambered in 5.56 NATO and safely fires both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. The muzzle is threaded 1/2x28 for suppressors and mounts, and the adjustable gas block lets you tune for suppressed or unsuppressed use without a trip to the bench.
What’s in the Build
X-Tra Lite Forged Receiver Set
7075-T6 forged aluminum, Type III hardcoat anodize, tensioning screw. Skeletonized Picatinny rail with engraved T-marks, deleted forward assist, “X” logo milling on the upper, skeletonized “X” magwell. .96 lb with dust cover.
16" 5.56 NATO Duty Series Pencil Barrel ›
4150 CMV, stress-relieved, button rifled 1:8, black nitride inside and out, mid-length gas, .625" gas journal, M4 extension, 11° target crown, 1/2x28 threads. MPI inspected and headspace checked. About 1.20 lb — the single biggest contributor to the rifle’s weight.
Slim .620" 3-Port Muzzle Brake ›
Steel, QPQ nitride, three ports that redirect gas to cut recoil and muzzle rise. At .620" OD, 2.125" long, and 1.12 oz, it clears the gas block and barrel nut, so either can come off for service without pulling the brake.
13" Carbon Fiber M-LOK® Handguard
High strength at a fraction of the weight of comparable aluminum handguards. M-LOK slots for lights, hand stops, and bipods.
Gunner Lightweight M16 BCG
Reduced reciprocating mass with Faxon Superfinish for smoother cycling and less felt movement in the rifle during recoil.
Faxon Patented Adjustable .625" Low Profile Gas Block ›
14 tactile settings from fully open to closed, adjusted with a 3/32" Allen key or flathead. Patented anti-fouling design keeps the adjustment screw out of the gas-port carbon path. 1" long, three set screws, sits under the carbon fiber handguard. Mid-length stainless gas tube.
Faxon Enhanced Match Trigger by Schmid®
Crisp, consistent break for confident shot placement at competition or training pace.
Controls & Furniture
Ambidextrous charging handle, ambidextrous safety selector, MFT Minimalist stock (or similar ultralight), B5 grip (or similar), carbine buffer system tuned to the ION-X gas profile.
The Foundation
About the X-Tra Lite Receiver Set
The X-Tra Lite set is what lets the ION-X live up to its name. Faxon took its forged 7075-T6 receiver set and refined it for mass reduction without giving up strength or fit. At .96 pounds for the pair with the ejection port cover installed, it is 2.08 ounces lighter than the standard Faxon forged set.
Trued by Faxon. Every set is trued in-house, with tighter tolerance on the lugs for a better upper-to-lower fit.
Honed inner bore. Smooths the bolt carrier’s travel through the upper.
Deleted forward assist. Material removed where it isn’t needed.
Skeletonized rail, magwell, and “X” milling. Engraved T-marks stay visible after any coating.

Who the ION-X Is For
Competition & Action Shooting
Sub-5-lb weight, a brake that flattens the muzzle, and a match trigger make for fast transitions, quick splits, and confident hits at speed.
Training & High Round Counts
Tuned gas and lightweight reciprocating mass keep the rifle smooth and easy to drive through long sessions and instructor days.
Defensive & Patrol
Ultralight handling in tight spaces and over extended carry, with the X-Tra Lite receiver set keeping mass to a minimum.
Who it’s not for: heavy-barrel precision shooters, or anyone who prioritizes maximum durability under sustained automatic fire. Pencil profile barrels are optimized for weight and accuracy, not extended high-volume duty cycles. If that is your use case, look at Faxon’s Gunner and Match Series barrels and complete rifles instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the ION-X Hyperlite weigh?
4.93 pounds as a complete rifle, with stock, grip, handguard, and muzzle brake installed. That is the finished weight, not a stripped upper-and-lower figure.
What makes the X-Tra Lite receiver set different from a standard forged set?
It is the same 7075-T6 forged aluminum as Faxon’s standard receivers, refined for mass reduction: skeletonized Picatinny rail with engraved T-marks, deleted forward assist, “X” logo milling on the upper, and a skeletonized “X” magwell. The set weighs .96 pounds with the ejection port cover, about 2.08 ounces lighter than the standard forged set. It is trued by Faxon with a honed inner bore for smoother BCG travel and tighter lug tolerances for upper-to-lower fit, and finished in Type III hardcoat anodize.
Why a pencil profile barrel?
Pencil profile barrels were developed for the M16A1 because they offer the best balance of weight and accuracy for general-purpose use. On the ION-X the pencil profile is the single biggest contributor to the sub-5-lb weight, and Faxon’s process control keeps the bore concentric and the harmonics consistent. The ION-X barrel is 4150 CMV, button rifled 1:8, nitrided inside and out, MPI inspected, and about 1.20 lb. It handles like a carbine and shoots like a 16" build.
How does the slim 3-port brake help during service?
The brake’s slim profile clears the gas block and barrel nut, so you can remove either one for cleaning, swapping, or service without first removing the muzzle device. That saves time and keeps your brake timing intact. It also makes the brake pin-and-weld friendly on shorter barrels, since the rest of the upper stays serviceable after a permanent install.
Can I shoot both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO?
Yes. The barrel is chambered in 5.56 NATO, which safely supports both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington ammunition.
Is the rifle suppressor-ready?
Yes. The 1/2x28 threaded muzzle accepts industry-standard 5.56 suppressors and mounts; remove the slim 3-port brake and install a HUB-compatible mount or a direct-thread suppressor. The natural pairing is the Harmonix® ION 5.56: 7.84 oz Grade 5 titanium, 6.75", and it ships with a 1/2x28 direct-thread HUB adapter. The Faxon patented adjustable gas block has 14 tactile settings from fully open to closed, adjusted with a 3/32" Allen key or flathead through the handguard, so you can tune cycling for suppressed use, manage gas to the shooter, and reduce wear on the rifle. Its anti-fouling design keeps the adjustment screw clear of gas-port carbon, so the settings keep working after high round counts.
Is each rifle test-fired before shipping?
Yes. Every ION-X is individually test-fired and gas-tuned with factory-new 55gr 5.56 NATO ammunition before it leaves the facility.
Which states can’t this rifle ship to?
The ION-X cannot be shipped to CA, CT, DC, HI, IL, MD, MA, NJ, or NY due to state restrictions on AR-style rifles. All other states ship to a licensed FFL dealer, where you complete a Form 4473 to take possession.
Where is the ION-X made?
The ION-X is machined and assembled in-house by Faxon Firearms in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Faxon is a family-owned, ISO 9001:2015 certified, federally licensed firearms manufacturer founded in 2012, with family manufacturing roots dating to 1978 in aerospace, defense, and industrial work. Every ION-X is covered by Faxon’s Lifetime Guarantee.
