What’s on This Rifle
The parts that decide how an AR-15 shoots are Faxon parts, and each one is sold on its own: every card links to its product page, specs, and reviews.
BARREL
Integral® Series 16″ Pencil 5.56 barrel ›
4150 CMV, QPQ Nitride, 1:8 twist, mid-length gas, integral brake. Every barrel is borescoped, bore and groove air gauged, headspace gauged with GO/NO-GO gauges, and 100% wet magnetic particle inspected before it ships.
UPPER RECEIVER
Faxon Enhanced Forged AR-15 upper ›
7075-T6 forging, Type III hard coat. Trued by Faxon, bore honed, tighter lug tolerance, engraved T-marks, skeletonized shell deflector.
LOWER RECEIVER
7075-T6 forging with an upper-to-lower tensioning screw to take out receiver play, and engraved T-marks.
HANDGUARD
Streamline carbon fiber M-LOK 13″ handguard ›
Carbon fiber and aerospace aluminum, M-LOK on all 8 surfaces, free-floated.
GAS BLOCK
Faxon patented adjustable .625" low-profile gas block ›
Patented: 14 detented settings, and the adjustment moves the gas tube, so the screw never sits in carbon. 4140, black flash nitride, 3 set screws.
GAS TUBE
Mid-length stainless gas tube ›
Faxon’s gas tubes are made from 304 seamless stainless steel tubing.
MUZZLE DEVICE
Integral 3-port brake
Machined from the barrel blank itself: 16″ overall with no pin and weld and no exposed threads.
BOLT CARRIER GROUP
8.5 oz complete, M16 pattern, 9310 bolt, superfinished and nitrided, MPI inspected.

What ION Ultralight Means
ION is Faxon’s lightweight line: pencil and Gunner barrels, Streamline carbon fiber handguards, the Gunner Lightweight BCG paired with Faxon’s patented adjustable gas block, the Schmid® match trigger, and ambidextrous controls. ION-X Hyperlite models go further with Faxon’s skeletonized X-Tra Lite forged receiver set. See every ION (Lightweight) firearm or compare all four lines.
Why 5.56 in a 16″ AR-15 rifle
5.56 NATO is the AR-15’s native cartridge: it fires 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington, magazines and ammunition are everywhere, and the 1:8 twist stabilizes everything from 55 gr FMJ to 77 gr match bullets. A mid-length gas system on a 16″ barrel keeps the impulse soft and the parts wear low.
A Brake You Can’t Lose
The 3-port brake is machined from the barrel blank, so the barrel measures 16″ overall with no pin and weld and no exposed threads. That also means it isn’t a suppressor host; for that in the ION line, look at the threaded ION and ION-X rifles.
Why a Lightweight Carrier Gets an Adjustable Gas Block
A lighter carrier needs less gas to cycle, and a suppressor adds back-pressure. Without a way to turn gas down, the bolt runs fast and hard: more recoil, more gas to the face, and more wear. Faxon’s rule runs one way: if a build gets a lightweight carrier, it gets an adjustable gas block. This one has both.
How It’s Built and Inspected
| Barrel | 4150 CMV, button rifled; brake machined from the same blank, so it’s 16″ overall with no pin and weld; salt-bath QPQ nitride; M4 extension torqued to 150 ft-lb |
| Barrel inspection | Borescoped after reaming, rifling, and chambering; bore and groove air gauged; chamber checked on a CMM program first and last of every run; muzzle threads gauged; headspace gauged; 100% wet MPI |
| Receivers | 7075-T6 forgings, Type III hard coat; barrel threads gauged on every upper, CMM checked every shift |
| Assembly | Assembled, inspected, and packed by Faxon in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio |
| Process control | Full CMM first-article inspection after any machine maintenance, tool change, or part change, and at least every 30 days; material certs checked at receiving; stress relief and nitride certified by lot |
What Makes a Good AR-15, and How This One Stacks Up

ION Ultralight 16″ 5.56 FAQs
Is the Faxon ION Ultralight Integral Muzzle Device 16″ 5.56 AR15 Rifle a good AR-15?
It’s built around the parts that matter most: a Faxon Integral® Series 4150 CMV barrel that’s borescoped, air gauged, headspace gauged, and 100% MPI inspected; Faxon forged receivers; the 5.56 Gunner Lightweight BCG; a Schmid® match trigger; and a free-float M-LOK handguard. It’s assembled in Ohio by the company that makes the barrel, and it’s covered by the Faxon Lifetime Guarantee.
What comes in the box?
The complete rifle, Magpul® PMAG® 30 Gen M2 MOE (5.56/.223) magazine, 5.56 magazine marker bands, cable lock, chamber flag, owner’s manual. Optics, sling, and suppressor are not included.
What ammunition and magazines does it use?
5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. Magazines: Standard AR-15 / STANAG 5.56 magazines. Bolt: standard 5.56 / M16-pattern bolt (installed).
Can I put a suppressor on it?
No. The 3-port brake is machined from the barrel, so there are no exposed threads. That’s what keeps it at 16″ overall with no pin and weld.
Do I need to adjust the gas block?
Not to start shooting. If you add a suppressor or change to very different ammunition, tune it: with the firearm unloaded and the block cool, start fully open, close one click at a time until the bolt stops locking back on an empty magazine, then open one or two clicks. A 3/32″ hex key or flat screwdriver does it.
What’s the difference between ION and ION-X?
Both are Faxon’s lightweight builds: carbon fiber handguards, the Gunner Lightweight BCG, the patented adjustable gas block, and the Schmid® trigger. ION-X Hyperlite models add Faxon’s skeletonized X-Tra Lite forged receiver set, .96 lb as a set.
Nitride or chrome lining: which is better?
Chrome lining still has its place, mainly sustained automatic fire. For the vast majority of shooters, Faxon’s salt-bath QPQ nitride does what they need and more: it hardens the bore and exterior, resists corrosion, adds virtually nothing to the dimensions (a few ten-thousandths of an inch, about a tenth the width of a human hair), and needs little to no break-in.
How does it ship?
To a licensed dealer (FFL). Enter your dealer’s information at checkout. Federal, state, and local laws apply.
Where is it made, and what is the warranty?
Faxon makes the barrel, receivers, gas block, and muzzle device in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, and assembles the rifle there. It’s covered by the Faxon Lifetime Guarantee.

Faxon ION Ultralight 5.56 Rifle
Sweet shooting firearm. If you are an older shooter and the weight of standard 5.56's becomes too much, this is the platform for you. Super light (4.95 pounds), accurate, and just fun to shoot.

The best AR-15 I've shot and the star of shoot day
Shoot day is fun for the whole family, but there is always a few of the smaller folks like moms or wives that wish they could enjoy the 223/556 rifles. Now they can. Mothers day ended up with mom advance requesting this as her next/main shooter. Didn't think she'd ever get tired of the hitting the gongs and she's never been more accurate/consistent/fast! Light weight made it so easy for her to hold and shoot. Standing, sitting, bench and the brake made it gentle enough too.... I'll write off all the ammo as a mothers day gift ;)
