The go-to upper receiver rod for serious AR-15 armorers. Midwest Industries’ MIURR locks into the barrel lug and seats tight in the receiver, giving you a solid, non-marring anchor point for barrel nut removal, barrel nut installation, and muzzle device work — horizontal or vertical in your bench vise. Machined from 4140 ordnance grade steel and finished in black oxide, this tool is built to survive repeated shop use without damaging your receiver or its finish.
What This Tool Does
The MIURR engages the barrel lug and fits snugly inside the upper receiver, locking the assembly in place so you can apply torque to the barrel nut without the upper rotating or slipping. Unlike makeshift solutions, the rod is specifically designed not to mar or damage the exterior of the receiver — so your hard coat anodize stays intact. Receiver-mounted sights can remain in place during use, saving disassembly time.
It handles the full range of upper receiver work: stubborn or seized barrel nuts, standard barrel nut installs, and muzzle device installation without contacting or damaging the index pin. The forward assist and port door cover can also be installed with the rod in place. Mount it horizontally or vertically in your bench vise — the geometry works either way.

What is an upper receiver rod and why do I need one?

Without a dedicated rod, the receiver tends to rotate or flex under wrench load — which can result in stripped threads, marred finish, or imprecise torque values. The MIURR gives you a solid, fixed anchor point so all your torque goes exactly where it should.
Can I use this with my AR-10 or .308 build?
This depends on the platform. The MIURR is designed for standard M4/M16 barrel extensions. It is not compatible with the DPMS G2 .308 platform, which uses a different receiver and barrel extension geometry. If you have an AR-10 or .308 build on a standard (DPMS LR-308 / SR-25) pattern, check your barrel extension type before ordering.
Do I need to remove my sights before using this tool?
No. The MIURR is designed so that receiver-mounted sights can remain installed during use. This saves you the time and hassle of removing and re-zeroing optics or iron sights every time you perform barrel work.
Will this work with a 9mm or pistol-caliber AR upper?
No. 9mm and rimfire AR uppers use non-standard barrel extensions and receiver dimensions that are not compatible with the MIURR. Use a tool specifically designed for pistol-caliber AR platforms for that work.
Can I mount this in a standard bench vise?
Yes. The MIURR is designed to be clamped in a standard bench vise either horizontally or vertically, depending on your workspace setup and preference. Both orientations provide a secure, non-marring hold on the upper receiver during barrel nut and muzzle device work.
