.223 Wylde is a hybrid chamber specification designed specifically for AR-15 semi-automatic rifles. It safely accepts both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition — giving you the ammo flexibility of a 5.56 chamber — while providing the tighter brass support and reduced headspace of a .223 chamber for improved accuracy potential. If you're loading match-grade .223 ammunition or running a mix of commercial .223 and military 5.56, the .223 Wylde chamber is the right choice.

No. This is a complete upper — the Faxon SuperFinished 5.56 M16 BCG and Faxon Edition Breek® Sledgehammer charging handle are already installed. You need a mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver to complete your build. Lower receiver, magazine, and ammunition are not included.

Two key hardware differences. First, gas block: this standard complete upper uses a fixed .625" gas block, while the suppressor-ready version (FX-URG-M223W16GA15-C-SR, $866) upgrades to a Faxon patented adjustable gas block for tuning suppressor backpressure, ammo, and cycling preference.

Second, muzzle device: this upper includes a standard MuzzLok® Ported Flash Hider — Faxon's patented reverse-thread timing nut system on 1/2×28 threads, no crush washer required, field-removable. The suppressor-ready version upgrades to a Plan B Compatible MuzzLok® Flash Hider, which uses the same reverse-thread timing nut system but adds external threads for Plan B→Hub adapters, allowing direct suppressor mounting without removing the device. Both are MuzzLok® — the Plan B version simply adds suppressor mount capability on top. If you're not planning to run a suppressor, this complete upper is the right choice.

No crush washer needed. MuzzLok® uses a reverse-thread jam nut (the extension nut) built into the device. Thread the flash hider onto the barrel, back it off to roughly your desired port orientation, then bring the reverse-thread timing nut forward against the barrel shoulder to lock the device in place. Torque to 20–25 ft-lbs. Because you're not fighting crush washer resistance, timing is faster and more repeatable — and the device can be removed and reinstalled in the field without destroying a washer or re-timing from scratch.

This upper uses the standard MuzzLok® Ported Flash Hider on 1/2×28 threads. The Plan B Compatible MuzzLok® (on the SR version of this upper) uses the same timing nut system but adds external threads for Plan B→Hub suppressor mounting adapters.

Both use Faxon's patented reverse-thread jam nut system — precise rotational timing, no crush washer, no shims, field-removable. The only functional difference is that Plan B Compatible MuzzLok® devices add external threads on the device body that accept Plan B→Hub adapters, enabling direct suppressor mounting without removing the muzzle device. Standard MuzzLok® devices (like the one on this upper) are standard 1/2×28 muzzle devices with the MuzzLok® timing advantage — they don't have the suppressor mount threads. If suppressor use is part of your plan, the SR version of this upper includes Plan B Compatible MuzzLok®.

Several things distinguish it. The material is 416R stainless steel rather than 4150 CMV — 416R is formulated specifically for rifle barrel manufacturing, providing excellent machinability for precise rifling and consistent bore dimensions. The rifling is 5R — five lands and grooves with radiused, offset land shoulders that reduce bullet jacket distortion and copper fouling compared to standard rifling. The finish is salt-bath nitride for corrosion and wear protection, and the barrel extension is coated with NP3 (Nickel-Teflon) for reduced friction and easier cleaning at the bolt interface. The crown is an 11-degree recessed target crown rather than a flush cut.

Mid-length gas positions the gas port farther from the chamber than a carbine-length system, which reduces port pressure and produces a longer, softer recoil impulse. On a 16" barrel, mid-length is the preferred choice for a general-purpose or precision-oriented build because it reduces wear on the bolt carrier group and buffer system over time and typically results in a more shootable platform. Carbine-length gas on a 16" barrel works but runs at higher pressure and produces a sharper, faster impulse.

Any mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver. The upper interfaces at the standard AR-15 upper/lower takedown and pivot pin dimensions. The Faxon Forged AR15 Lower Receiver is a natural match for a complete Faxon build. You'll need a lower parts kit and stock or brace separately.
