FAXON DUTY SERIES SOCOM PROFILE 14.5" MID-LENGTH 5.56 NATO AR15 BARREL
FaxonDescription
Rifle Barrels › Duty Series › 5.56 NATO / .223 › 14.5″ SOCOM, Mid-Length | Works with: 5.56 BCG • .750″ gas block • mid-length gas tube • 1/2x28 muzzle devices • 5.56 suppressors
Why the 14.5″ SOCOM
Fourteen and a half inches is the length the M4 was built around and the most-proven 5.56 barrel length there is: enough velocity for 55 through 77 gr to do their work, short enough to move through a doorway or a truck cab. With a muzzle device pinned and welded to reach 16″, it makes a rifle that needs no paperwork and ends up an inch and a half shorter than a 16″ barrel wearing the same device, because the last stretch is hollow flash hider instead of solid steel. That is why the 14.5″ is the length most duty carbines are built to, and why Faxon makes it in every Duty Series profile.
The SOCOM is the profile for the 14.5″ that will be run hardest. Barrel steel does two jobs under fire: it stays stiff so the muzzle points where it did on the last shot, and it soaks up heat so the bore does not walk as a string goes on, and both scale with diameter ahead of the gas block, where a Gunner or Pencil is thinnest. On this barrel the section from the block to the muzzle is a full .730″, with a .845″ step at the block, and behind the block it carries the same Government taper the Gunner does, so it puts the extra steel exactly where a pinned-device carbine takes its heat and none where it would only add swing weight. At 1.50 lb it is about three ounces heavier than the 14.5″ Gunner and five heavier than the 14.5″ Pencil; if the rifle will see fast pairs, mag dumps, and suppressed fire and is expected to shoot the same at round 300 as it did at round 3, that is the right three ounces. If you want the same profile with a removable device and a direct-thread can, the 16″ SOCOM is the one.
What “Duty Series” Means
Duty Series is Faxon’s 4150 CMV line: the M4/M16 barrel alloy, salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside and out. 4150 carries about 0.50% carbon plus vanadium, which gives it more strength and wear resistance at temperature than 4140, and nitride adds a hard, corrosion-resistant surface to the bore and exterior without plating anything, and it adds virtually nothing to the surface: a few ten-thousandths of an inch, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair. It is the right combination for a barrel that will be shot hard, carried in the weather, and cleaned when there is time. Faxon’s stainless Match Series is the option when you want the precision-barrel formula; the Duty Series is the one to reach for when the rifle has a job.

How It’s Made
Every Duty Series barrel is made start to finish in Faxon’s Greater Cincinnati plant, on Faxon’s machines, to Faxon’s prints. This is the routing for this barrel.
- Drill and pull-ream 4150 CMV bar is gun-drilled, then pull-reamed from the chamber end to a .2195″ bore held to ±.001″, with a 32 Ra maximum finish checked on a profilometer and a borescope pass for reamer marks.
- Button rifle A carbide button is pulled through from the chamber end to form six grooves, right-hand, one turn in 8 inches, to a .2250″ groove diameter. Bore and groove are air-gauged.
- Stress relieve and qualify The rifled blank is stress relieved before it becomes a finished barrel, then the OD is qualified true to the bore so every later cut references the same axis.
- Turn the SOCOM profile Muzzle end first: the .750″ gas journal is turned to .7490–.7497″ and checked with a micrometer on every barrel, held within .005″ of the bore, the .730″ forward section is turned true to the same axis, and the 1/2x28 muzzle is threaded and crowned. Then the breech end: the Government taper, the .845″ step, the .980″ chamber journal, and the extension thread.
- Chamber The 5.56 NATO chamber is cut and checked with a headspace gauge; chamber surfaces are held to a 20 Ra finish.
- MPI and nitride The machined barrel is 100% wet magnetic-particle inspected for surface and near-surface flaws, then salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside the bore and out, hardening the surface while adding virtually nothing to it.
- Gas port, extension, pin After nitride, the .081″ gas port is drilled and reamed through the .750″ journal, the M4 extension is torqued to 150 ft-lb and pinned, and the barrel is headspaced with a 5.56 go/no-go gauge.
- Mark The Faxon shield and order number are laser-engraved on the chamber journal and “5.56 NATO 1-8T” ahead of the gas block.
AIR-GAUGED
Bore and groove diameters measured with air gauges to ±.001″ after reaming and after rifling.
100% ON THE CRITICALS
Every barrel: gas journal on a micrometer, muzzle thread on a thread gauge, chamber on a headspace gauge, bore on a borescope.
100% WET MPI
Every barrel is wet magnetic particle inspected, the more sensitive method, for surface and near-surface flaws, right before it goes into the nitride bath.

Open the Upper Builder ›Duty Series 14.5″ SOCOM 5.56 FAQs
Is this a 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington chamber?
5.56 NATO, headspaced with a 5.56 go/no-go gauge after the extension is installed. A 5.56 chamber has the longer throat that lets it fire both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington safely; the reverse is not true, so a .223-chambered barrel should not be fed 5.56.
Why mid-length gas on a 14.5″ barrel?
Because it puts the port about two inches farther from the chamber than carbine-length gas, so the system taps the bore at lower pressure. On a 14.5″ that means a softer, more linear recoil impulse, less wear on the bolt and buffer, and better manners with a suppressor, with about five inches of barrel past the port for plenty of dwell. Mid-length is the right gas system for a 14.5″ 5.56; one owner runs this barrel with a pinned comp on a standard carbine buffer and reports 250 rounds without a stoppage. This barrel needs a mid-length gas tube.
What is the SOCOM profile on a 14.5″, and how does it compare to the Gunner?
A heavy-front contour derived from the barrel SOCOM specified for the M4A1: a .845″ step at the gas block and a full .730″ section from the block to the muzzle, where a Gunner runs .500″. Behind the block it carries the same Government taper as the Gunner, so the extra mass sits where a carbine takes its heat and holds its pinned device, not under the handguard. That buys heat capacity and stiffness at the muzzle, so the point of impact stays put through long strings and the barrel lasts under sustained fire. At 1.50 lb it is about three ounces heavier than the 14.5″ Gunner; the Gunner is the lighter, faster-handling choice, the SOCOM is the one for a rifle that will be run hard.
What bullet weights does the 1:8 twist stabilize?
Everything from 55 gr FMJ through 69 and 77 gr match bullets. 1:8 is the most versatile twist for a general-purpose 5.56; 1:7 is only needed for the longest tracer and 80-plus grain projectiles, and 1:9 starts to run out of spin above 69 gr.
What gas block and gas tube does it take?
A .750″ gas block on the 1.9″ journal and a mid-length gas tube. Faxon makes a .750″ adjustable and a .750″ fixed low-profile block, and a 304 stainless mid-length gas tube. The gas port is reamed to .081″.
What does 4150 CMV mean?
Chrome-moly-vanadium steel with about 0.50% carbon, the alloy the M4 and M16 barrel specification calls for. The higher carbon and the vanadium give it more strength and wear resistance at temperature than 4140, which matters most on a barrel that will see fast strings and sustained fire.
Is the nitride inside the bore?
Yes. Salt-bath QPQ nitride is a diffusion treatment, not a plating, so it hardens the surface of the bore and the exterior while adding virtually nothing to it: the surface grows by a few ten-thousandths of an inch, .0002–.0004″, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair or about the diameter of a single red blood cell. It also gives the barrel its corrosion resistance and matte black finish.
Does it come with a gas block, gas tube, or muzzle device?
No. It ships with the black-oxide M4 extension installed, torqued, pinned, and headspaced. Gas block, gas tube, and muzzle device are sold separately; the muzzle is threaded 1/2x28.
Will it work with a suppressor?
Yes. The 1/2x28 muzzle takes any 5.56 direct-thread can or mount, and mid-length gas is the friendlier system for suppressed use. For a rifle that runs suppressed most of the time, pair it with the Faxon .750″ adjustable gas block so you can bring the gas down.
Do I have to pin and weld a muzzle device on a 14.5″ barrel?
If you want a rifle, yes. A rifle needs a barrel of at least 16″ measured from the closed bolt face to the end of a permanently attached muzzle device, so a 14.5″ barrel needs a device at least 1.5″ long pinned and welded (or high-temp silver soldered) to the muzzle to make it legal on a rifle lower. A plain-body flash hider or suppressor mount adds well over that; a standard A2 clears it by a fraction of an inch, so measure before you weld. Faxon’s MuzzLok devices use a locking extension nut and are not designed to be pinned and welded, so pick a fixed-body device for this job. Without a permanent device, a 14.5″ is a pistol or an SBR, with the same rules as any barrel under 16″. Most gunsmiths and many dealers do the pin and weld; once it is done the device is part of the barrel and you cannot swap it, so pick the one you will keep, and note that a direct-thread suppressor is then off the table unless the pinned device is a suppressor mount. The .730″ SOCOM section behind the threads gives the pin plenty of wall to seat in.
Why 14.5″ instead of 16″?
Length and balance. With a pinned flash hider a 14.5″ ends up about an inch and a half shorter than a 16″ wearing the same device, and that inch and a half is hollow muzzle device instead of solid barrel, so the rifle is lighter at the muzzle and the balance point moves back toward your hands. Velocity is about 50 to 75 fps below a 16″ with 55 gr, which makes no practical difference. The 16″ SOCOM is the choice if you want to swap muzzle devices or run a direct-thread can.
How fast does 5.56 leave a 14.5″ barrel?
Roughly 2,900 to 3,000 fps with 55 gr ammunition and 2,800 to 2,900 with 62 gr, depending on the load, or about 50 to 75 fps less than a 16″. It is the length the M4 was built around, and 5.56 does everything it is asked to do from it.
Is the gas journal dimpled for set screws?
No. The journal ships round so any .750″ low-profile, clamp-on, or pinned gas block fits the 1.9″ journal. A set-screw block holds on the nitrided journal when its screws are torqued with thread locker; if you want dimples, mark them through the block’s screw holes and drill.

My new standard
I purchased this barrel initially because of the decent price point for the construction and features of the barrel. I'm extremely happy that I did. The finish on the barrel is immaculate and the the shipping was faster than guaranteed. Coupled with an aero upper and Frankenstein lower I'm at about 3/4-1 moa consistenly. From now on when I need a barrel for a build I'll be contacting Faxon firearms.
