Why 6mm ARC in a 12.5″ pistol

Hornady designed 6mm ARC for long-range performance from AR-15 magazines, and Faxon was one of the first barrel makers to chamber it. It uses a Type 2 Grendel/ARC bolt and Grendel-pattern magazines; the 1:7.5 twist is set for heavy, high-BC 6mm bullets.

Is the Faxon PRO 12.5″ 6mm ARC AR15 Pistol a good AR-15 pistol?

It’s built around the parts that matter most: a Faxon Match Series 416-R Stainless barrel that’s borescoped, air gauged, headspace gauged, and 100% MPI inspected; Faxon forged receivers; the Superfinished 6.5 Grendel / 6mm ARC Type 2 BCG; a Schmid® match trigger; and a free-float M-LOK handguard. It’s assembled in Ohio by the company that makes the barrel, and it’s covered by the Faxon Lifetime Guarantee.

What comes in the box?

The complete pistol, Duramag 10-round 6.5 Grendel / 6mm ARC / 22 ARC magazine, fill-in magazine marker bands, cable lock, chamber flag, owner’s manual. Optics, sling, and suppressor are not included.

What ammunition and magazines does it use?

6mm ARC. Magazines: 6.5 Grendel / 6mm ARC magazines. Bolt: Type 2 6.5 Grendel / 6mm ARC bolt (installed).

Is it suppressor ready?

Yes. It has a MuzzLok® Plan B compatible flash hider (5/8x24, .375″ bore) and Faxon’s patented adjustable gas block. Add a Plan B to HUB adapter and a .30 cal HUB-mount suppressor, then tune the gas: start fully open, close one click at a time until the bolt stops locking back on an empty magazine, and open one or two clicks.

Is this a pistol or a rifle?

It’s sold as a pistol: a 12.5″ barrel with an SB Tactical® SBA3 pistol brace, not a stock. Laws on AR pistols and pistol braces vary by state and locality and can change, so know and follow the laws where you live. Faxon doesn’t provide legal advice.

Do I need to adjust the gas block?

Not to start shooting. If you add a suppressor or change to very different ammunition, tune it: with the firearm unloaded and the block cool, start fully open, close one click at a time until the bolt stops locking back on an empty magazine, then open one or two clicks. A 3/32″ hex key or flat screwdriver does it.

What does PRO add over SPORT?

Nitride or chrome lining: which is better?

Chrome lining still has its place, mainly sustained automatic fire. For the vast majority of shooters, Faxon’s salt-bath QPQ nitride does what they need and more: it hardens the bore and exterior, resists corrosion, adds virtually nothing to the dimensions (a few ten-thousandths of an inch, about a tenth the width of a human hair), and needs little to no break-in.
