Why a Dedicated Blowback 9mm Upper

A 9mm cartridge doesn’t need a gas system to cycle an AR. The bolt carrier’s own mass and the buffer hold the action closed until pressure drops, then the case pushes it rearward — straight blowback. That is why this upper has no gas port, gas block, or gas tube, and why its bolt carrier group is a heavy, full-mass 9mm carrier instead of a 5.56 BCG. Fewer parts, less to clean, nothing to tune.

The barrel is purpose-built for it. Instead of a separate barrel extension, the Light Taper barrel has a one-piece .999″ receiver shank with a pressed-in index pin, and its chamber mouth is radiused and chamfered so it feeds from Glock®-pattern and Colt-pattern 9mm lowers alike. The Light Taper profile — .675″ tapering to .625″ — keeps the 10.5″ barrel at 1.03 lb.

What “Duty Series” Means

Duty Series is Faxon’s 4150 CMV barrel line: the M4/M16 barrel alloy, salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside and out. Nitride is a diffusion treatment, not a plating, so it hardens the bore and exterior and adds corrosion resistance while adding virtually nothing to the surface. It is the right combination for a barrel that will be shot hard, carried in the weather, and cleaned when there is time.

What lower does this upper work with?

A Glock®-pattern or Colt-pattern 9mm AR lower. The barrel’s chamber mouth is radiused and chamfered to feed from both, and the installed Faxon Gen 2 9mm BCG is built for both. A standard 5.56 AR-15 lower and magazine will not feed 9mm.

Does it need a gas block or gas tube?

No. It is a straight-blowback 9mm, so there is no gas port, gas block, or gas tube. The carrier’s mass and the buffer do the work.

What buffer should I run?

A heavy 9mm buffer, 5.5 to 8 oz, with a standard carbine spring — or whatever buffer system your 9mm lower is designed around. A standard 3 oz carbine buffer is too light for blowback 9mm.

What bolt carrier group and charging handle are installed?

The Faxon Superfinished 9mm PCC Blowback Full-Mass BCG, Gen 2: an 8620 carrier at 14.9 oz with a removable carrier weight, a ramped bottom for broad trigger compatibility, and an M16-style pivoting extractor, salt-bath nitrided. It is paired with a mil-spec AR15 charging handle.

Can I put this 10.5″ upper on a rifle lower?

Only if that lower is registered as a short-barreled rifle. A 10.5″ barrel on a lower with a stock is an SBR under the National Firearms Act. On a pistol lower it builds an AR pistol. Check your state and local law before you assemble it.

Can I run a suppressor on it?

Yes. The muzzle is threaded 1/2x28, so you can remove the installed device and thread on a 9mm direct-thread can or mount. For a dedicated suppressor host, the Suppressor Ready version ships with a MuzzLok® Plan B flash hider instead.

What ammunition does it shoot?

9mm Luger from 115 to 147 gr, standard or +P. 147 gr loads are subsonic, the usual choice for running suppressed.

Where is it made, and what is the warranty?

The barrel is made start to finish in Faxon’s Greater Cincinnati, Ohio plant, and the upper is assembled there. It is covered by the Faxon Lifetime Guarantee.
