The HL designation stands for High Lumen. The standard TLR-1 produces approximately 300 lumens; the TLR-1 HL produces 1,000 lumens — more than three times the output. The higher output comes with a shorter runtime: the TLR-1 HL runs for 1.5 hours at full 1,000-lumen output on two CR123A batteries, versus longer runtimes at the lower output of the standard model. Both units share the same housing design, rail clamp system, ambidextrous switch layout, and holster ecosystem. The TLR-1 HL is the choice when maximum output is the priority; the standard TLR-1 trades some output for extended battery life. For law enforcement, military, and home defense applications where the full 1,000 lumens provides a meaningful tactical advantage, the HL is the appropriate selection.

Lumens measure total luminous flux — the overall amount of light emitted in all directions from the source. Candela measures intensity in a specific direction — how bright the center of the beam is at its focused point. A light with high lumens but a wide beam will flood a room with light but may have a less intense center hotspot. A light with high candela but a narrow beam can project a bright spot at long distances but may leave the periphery dark. The TLR-1 HL produces 1,000 lumens and 20,000 candela peak intensity from a deliberately wide beam pattern, which means it provides strong overall room illumination for close-quarters environments while maintaining a visible hotspot for target identification. For home defense and duty use at typical engagement distances, the wide beam is a practical advantage over a tightly focused long-range thrower.

The TLR-1 HL uses a rail grip clamp that slides onto the rail from the front and locks with a thumb key. No tools are required for mounting or removal. The clamp is designed to accommodate multiple rail widths — Glock, M1913 Picatinny, Beretta 90two, S&W SW99/TSW, and SIG P320 — without requiring separate adapter keys or shims. Mounting positions the light body forward so it does not obstruct the muzzle, and the clamp provides a secure lock that does not shift under recoil. For officers or users who need to transfer the light between multiple platforms, the tool-free design allows rapid transition.

The TLR-1 HL’s strobe is user-programmable, meaning you can configure whether strobe is the first output mode activated or the secondary mode. In law enforcement and military contexts, strobe is used for disorientation of subjects or as an emergency signaling mode. In the default configuration, strobe is typically accessible through a deliberate switch sequence rather than a single press, to prevent inadvertent activation during normal use. Refer to the included user manual for the specific programming procedure for switching between strobe-first and constant-first configurations.

The TLR-1 HL is designed to fit most existing light-bearing holsters made for the TLR-1 family. The housing dimensions are the same as the standard TLR-1. If your holster is specifically molded for the TLR-1 (not the TLR-1S, TLR-2, or other variants), the TLR-1 HL should be a direct fit. If you are unsure, verify with your holster manufacturer that their TLR-1 fit accommodates the HL variant before ordering.

The TLR-1 HL is powered by two CR123A 3V lithium batteries, which are included in the package. CR123A batteries are widely available at hardware, electronics, and outdoor retailers. They are commonly stocked by law enforcement supply channels as well. The 1.5-hour rated runtime at 1,000 lumens is based on CR123A cells; other battery types are not recommended. CR123A batteries should not be confused with 18650 rechargeable cells, which are physically similar but not compatible with this light.
