Why Your New 10/22 Barrel Fits Tight — And How to Install It

Short answer: A Faxon 10/22® barrel is a deliberately tighter fit than a factory barrel. The shank is held to a narrow tolerance so it fills the receiver bore instead of floating in it, which removes the clearance that causes barrel droop and shifting zero. On some receivers it will slide in with light pressure. On a tight pairing it is a genuine interference fit, and the right answer is a thermal fit — freeze the barrel, warm the receiver, and it goes home without force.

Why a Faxon 10/22 barrel fits tighter than your factory barrel

Ruger® has to guarantee that every barrel they produce drops into every receiver they produce. Across a production run measured in millions, the only way to do that is to cut the barrel shank on the generous side of the tolerance band. That guarantees assembly. It also leaves measurable clearance between the shank and the receiver bore.

That clearance causes two problems.

What barrel droop is

A 10/22 barrel is cantilevered. It is held at one end by a V-block and two screws, and the rest of it hangs unsupported. When there is clearance between the shank and the receiver bore, gravity pulls the muzzle end down and the barrel seats nose-low. That is barrel droop.

Droop alone is not fatal to accuracy — you can zero around a barrel that sits slightly low. The real problem is that a loose shank does not droop the same amount every time. Pull the barrel to clean or swap it, put it back, and it can settle a few thousandths differently. Your zero moves with it.

How we spec the fit

The shank on a Faxon 10/22 barrel is machined to Ø.689" ±.001", held concentric to the bore within .005" runout. That is a two-thousandth total band, positioned to fill the receiver bore rather than float inside it.

On our own FF-22 Receiver we control the other half of that fit as well. The barrel channel bore is specified at Ø.687" +.002"/-.000" — a one-sided tolerance that can never open up past .689". Put those two numbers together and a Faxon barrel in a Faxon receiver is a close fit by design, and at the tight end of both tolerance bands it is a true interference fit.

That is intentional. The barrel locates itself concentric to the receiver as it goes in, and the V-block then clamps a barrel that is already in position instead of dragging it into position. The barrel returns to the same place every time it is installed, which is what a repeatable zero actually depends on.

Fluting works in the same direction. Removing material along the length of the barrel drops the weight hanging off the receiver, which reduces the moment trying to pull the muzzle down in the first place.

The snug fit is the feature. It should never require force. It will feel like a real fit rather than a drop-in.

Before you start: check the receiver, not the barrel

Here is the most useful diagnostic, and almost nobody runs it first.

Was your factory barrel tight coming out? A factory barrel is normally a loose fit. If yours fought you on the way out, the problem is in the receiver, not in the new barrel.

Nine times out of ten that is carbon and dried oil varnish built up in the receiver bore over years of shooting. Occasionally it is a burr or a raised edge left by the V-block. Either way, a few thousandths of buildup in a bore that is already a close fit will stop a correctly machined barrel cold.

Clean the receiver bore thoroughly before you try anything else. Degrease it, work it with a patch and a nylon brush, and get it back to bare metal. Do the same to the shank of the new barrel. A large share of "it will not go in" is solved right here.

How to install a Ruger 10/22 barrel: step by step

Safety first. Confirm the rifle is unloaded. Magazine out, bolt locked back, chamber visually and physically checked before you touch anything else.

Tools you need

  • 5/32" hex key (V-block screws)
  • Bore solvent or degreaser, patches, nylon brush
  • Zip-top freezer bag
  • Hair dryer or heat gun
  • Inch-pound torque driver
  • Calipers (optional, useful for troubleshooting)

1. Remove the action and the old barrel

Take the action out of the stock. Remove the bolt and the trigger assembly — you want the receiver bare, and you do not want heat anywhere near the polymer trigger housing later. Loosen the two V-block screws, lift the V-block out, and pull the barrel straight forward. Do not rock or twist it aggressively.

2. Clean both mating surfaces

Receiver bore and barrel shank, both back to bare metal. This step fixes more tight-fit problems than every other step combined.

3. Chill the barrel

Seal the barrel in a zip-top bag and put it in the freezer for 30 to 60 minutes. The bag matters. It keeps condensation off the steel and out of the bore as the barrel comes back to room temperature. A household freezer is plenty. You do not need dry ice or anything exotic.

4. Warm the receiver

Use a hair dryer or a heat gun on low, moving constantly, until the receiver is uncomfortably warm to the touch — roughly 140–150°F. Do not exceed about 200°F, and do not park the heat in one spot. If you have an optic mounted, take it off first; if a rail is bonded to the receiver, keep heat off it.

5. Install the barrel — fast, and straight

You have roughly 30 to 60 seconds before the two parts equalize in temperature. Pull the barrel out of the bag, line up the extractor slot before you start it, and push the barrel straight in. No twisting, no rocking, and do not try to rotate it to find the slot once it has started. Seat it fully against the receiver face.

6. Install the V-block

Set the V-block in place and bring the two screws down evenly, alternating between them rather than running one all the way down first. The V-block does not need to be cranked — the specified torque is light, and over-torquing can distort the fit you just made. Check your owner's manual for the figure.

7. Let it normalize

Allow the rifle to return to room temperature before you function check or shoot it. Then reassemble, function check on an empty chamber, and confirm zero at the range.

Why the thermal fit works

Aluminum and steel expand at different rates. A 10/22 receiver is aluminum, with a coefficient of thermal expansion roughly two and a half times that of stainless barrel steel. Heat the receiver and chill the barrel at the same time and you are working both sides of the fit at once.

The rough arithmetic:

  • Receiver: an aluminum bore in this size range, warmed 80°F above room temperature, opens up about .0007".
  • Barrel: a stainless shank chilled 70°F below room temperature shrinks about .0003".
  • Combined: roughly .001" of additional clearance.

A thousandth of an inch does not sound like much. On a fit engineered to be near zero clearance, it is the entire difference between fighting the barrel and sliding it home. This is standard shop practice for interference fits, and it works just as well on a kitchen counter.

What not to do

  • Do not hammer it. You will damage the receiver face, the shank, or both.
  • Do not press it in. An arbor press gives you no feedback until something has already gone wrong.
  • Do not use a torch. A hair dryer or heat gun on low is all the heat this needs. Direct flame will ruin the receiver's temper and its finish.
  • Do not sand, polish, or lap the shank. This is the big one. Removing material to make it fit permanently gives away the precise fit you paid for, and there is no putting it back.
  • Do not over-torque the V-block to pull in a barrel that is not fully seated. If it is not seated, stop and find out why.

Troubleshooting a 10/22 barrel that will not seat

If the receiver bore is clean, the shank is clean, and a proper thermal fit still will not seat the barrel, stop. Do not escalate to force.

Measure the shank with calipers. It should read between .688" and .690". If it does, the barrel is in spec and the issue is on the receiver side — remaining buildup, a burr, or a receiver at the tight end of its tolerance. Aftermarket and older receivers vary considerably more than current production does.

How tight should the 10/22 V-block screws be?

Light. Follow the torque specification in your owner's manual, tighten the two screws evenly and alternately, and resist the urge to crank them. Over-torquing the V-block can distort the barrel fit and move your point of impact.

Will a Faxon barrel fit a 10/22 Takedown?

No. Our 10/22 barrels and the FF-22 receiver are built for non-takedown rifles. Takedown models use a different barrel interface entirely.

Grouping also benefits from the barrel being properly supported rather than hanging with clearance at the breech.
