What an Adjustable Gas Block Does (and Why You Might Want One)
A direct-impingement AR is gas operated. Propellant gas leaves the barrel through a small port under the gas block, travels down the gas tube, and drives the bolt carrier rearward to eject and reload. Every barrel is ported for a worst case: weak ammunition, cold weather, no suppressor. Run that same barrel with hot loads, a suppressor, or a lightweight carrier and it is overgassed. You feel it as sharper recoil and gas in your face, and the rifle feels it as a carrier that outruns the magazine, brass thrown into the next lane, and faster wear on the bolt, extractor, and buffer.
An adjustable gas block lets you meter the gas to what the rifle actually needs. Suppressed, you close it down a few clicks and the rifle runs like it did unsuppressed. Unsuppressed, you tune for the softest recoil that still locks the bolt back on an empty magazine. That is the whole pitch, and it is why almost every adjustable gas block review you read is written by someone who just put a can on a rifle.
Why the Faxon Design Is Different: The Screw Never Touches Carbon
The knock on adjustable gas blocks has always been the same: the metering screw threads into the gas passage, which is the hottest, dirtiest place on the rifle, and after a few thousand rounds carbon packs the threads until the screw will not turn. Owners learn to heat the block, soak it, or just leave it where it is.
Faxon’s patent-pending design (US 2025/0277639 A1) takes the screw out of the gas path entirely. Gas exits the barrel port into the block’s passage exactly as it would in a fixed block. What moves is the gas tube. The tube passes through the block and is pinned to a hardened adjustment plate on the rear of the block rather than to the block body. Turning the adjustment screw slides the plate, and the tube with it, forward or rearward, which shifts the tube’s inlet hole relative to the gas passage and opens or closes the effective port. The screw only ever touches the plate. As The Firearm Blog put it at launch, the screw “moves the gas tube back and forth thus changing the amount of the gas tube hole and gas port overlap.”
The second thing owners mention is the clicks. Each of the 14 settings is a real detent: a spring inside the mechanism presses into notches machined into the screw head, so you feel every click, the setting holds under recoil and heat cycling, and you can count back to a known setting without a witness mark. Adjustment is a 3/32″ hex key or a flat screwdriver, from the receiver side, through the handguard.

The block launched in November 2024. Shooting Illustrated ran a first look that same month, calling gas blocks “one of the most crucial connecting points between a rifle’s barrel and its action” and noting the system “is meant to make life easier for shooters of both suppressed and unsuppressed firearms.” The Firearm Blog covered the mechanism in December 2024, and its readers got the point immediately; one commenter summed it up as “a unique design that prevents the adjustment screw from getting carbon locked.”
Which Journal Size You Need
The gas journal is the turned-down section of the barrel the block clamps to. Measure it with calipers, or check the barrel’s product page; every Faxon barrel page lists the gas block diameter it needs. All three blocks share the same mechanism, footprint, and set screws.

One detail on the .875″: it sets the gas tube .080″ higher over the bore than the other two. Large-frame cartridges like 8.6 Blackout run .875″ journals on short gas systems, where a standard-height tube can bind on the barrel nut, and the extra height keeps it clear. It still takes any standard AR gas tube.
Installing and Tuning It
Installation is a fixed-block install with one extra step. Because the tube pins to the adjustment plate rather than the block body, you turn the screw until the plate is fully forward before you drive the roll pin. Then slide the tube in from the rear, align the pin holes, drive the pin flush, fit the block over the journal and the tube into the upper, bore-scope the block to the barrel’s gas port, and tighten the three set screws. A hammer, a flat punch, and a roll-pin punch cover it, and Faxon offers a free 3D-printable fixture that holds the block square while you pin it. Tuning is what the OpticsPlanet reviewer above described: start fully open and confirm the rifle runs, close one click at a time until the bolt fails to lock back on an empty magazine, then open back up one or two clicks. Note the click count. Retune when you add or remove a suppressor or change to a very different load. Because the screw carries no carbon, you never have to clean or heat anything first.

Why doesn’t the Faxon adjustable gas block seize like other adjustable blocks?
Because the adjustment screw never enters the gas path. It moves an adjustment plate that the gas tube is pinned to, sliding the tube to open or close the port. Carbon has no way to reach the screw threads, so it turns as freely after thousands of rounds as it did new.
How many settings does it have?

Does it come with a gas tube?
