FAXON MATCH SERIES HEAVY FLUTED 18" RIFLE-LENGTH .308 WIN AR10 BARREL
FaxonDescription
Rifle Barrels › Match Series › .308 Win › 18″ Heavy Fluted, 1:10, Rifle-Length | Works with: .750″ gas block • rifle gas tube • AR-10 BCG, .308 / 6.5 CM / 8.6 BLK • 5/8x24 muzzle devices • .30 cal suppressors
Why .308 Win in an AR-10
.308 Winchester is the cartridge the AR-10 and SR-25-pattern magazine were built around, and it is still the most versatile big-bore semi-auto round: deer and elk, long-range steel, and the widest ammunition selection of any AR-10 chambering.
Faxon’s AR-10 barrels use a DPMS LR-308-pattern barrel extension. That pattern fits DPMS-style uppers; it does not fit Armalite AR-10 rifles, which use different locking lugs.

Why a 1:10 Twist
A 1:10 twist is the standard for .308 and stabilizes the full range of common bullets, from 147 to 150 gr FMJ and hunting loads through the 168 to 178 gr match bullets precision shooters favor.
| 147–150 gr | Fully stable |
| 168 gr match (SMK, GMM) | Fully stable |
| 175–178 gr match | Fully stable |
Velocity by Barrel Length
From one barrel cut down an inch at a time. Expect about 21 to 23 fps per inch.
| Load (fps) | 18″ | 20″ | 22″ | 24″ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 168 gr Federal Gold Medal Match | 2,523 | 2,565 | 2,597 | 2,635 |

The Heavy Fluted Profile and Rifle-Length Gas
The Heavy Fluted profile starts with a heavy, stiff contour for precision and cuts straight flutes along the barrel to remove weight and add surface area for cooling, so you keep the rigidity without carrying all of the steel. Rifle-length gas gives the longest dwell time and the softest impulse on long barrels.
What “Match Series” Means
Match Series is Faxon’s 416-R stainless line. 416-R machines cleanly and holds a consistent bore, and Faxon button rifles it with 5R rifling, five lands with sloped sides instead of sharp-cornered ones, which deforms the bullet less and fouls less. Then the barrel is salt-bath QPQ nitrided inside and out. Nitride is a diffusion treatment, not a plating: it hardens the bore surface and adds corrosion resistance while adding virtually nothing to the dimensions, a few ten-thousandths of an inch, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair. It needs little to no break-in.
How it compares to Faxon’s other lines: the Duty Series is 4150 CMV with the same nitride finish, the hard-use option; the MATCH-X Series takes 416-R further with a honed and lapped bore and an uncoated exterior; and the Combat Series offers classic configurations with chrome-lined bores and manganese phosphate.

Match Series 18″ .308 Win FAQs
Will it fit my AR-10?
It uses a DPMS LR-308-pattern barrel extension, which fits DPMS-style AR-10/LR-308 uppers. It does not fit Armalite AR-10 rifles, which use different locking lugs.
What bullet weights does a 1:10 twist stabilize?
The full range of common .308 bullets, from 147 to 150 gr through 168 to 178 gr match bullets.
What gas block and gas tube does it take?
A .750″ gas block on the 1.1″ journal and a rifle-length gas tube. Faxon’s patented adjustable .750″ block is the recommended pick, especially suppressed. The gas port is .093″, reamed to size.
Will it run suppressed and unsuppressed?
Yes. A suppressor adds back-pressure, so Faxon recommends its patented adjustable gas block: tune it for your can and ammunition, then open it back up when you shoot unsuppressed. If you run a lightweight carrier, always pair it with an adjustable gas block.
How is Match Series different from Duty Series and MATCH-X?
Match Series is 416-R stainless with 5R rifling and QPQ nitride inside and out. Duty Series is 4150 CMV with the same nitride finish. MATCH-X is 416-R with a honed and lapped bore and an uncoated exterior. All are made in Greater Cincinnati.
Is the nitride inside the bore?
Yes. Salt-bath QPQ nitride is a diffusion treatment, not a plating, so it hardens the bore and exterior while adding virtually nothing to them: the surface grows by a few ten-thousandths of an inch, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair. It needs little to no break-in.
Does it come with a gas block, gas tube, or muzzle device?
No. It ships with the nickel-Teflon extension installed, torqued to 150 ft-lb, pinned, and headspaced. Gas block, gas tube, and muzzle device are sold separately; the muzzle is threaded 5/8x24.
Is it full-auto capable, and how much heat can it take?
Yes. Like every Faxon nitrided rifle barrel, it is full-auto capable. The barrel is stress relieved, magnetic particle inspected for flaws, and salt-bath nitrided at roughly 1,050°F, so the steel and the nitride are stable far beyond normal firing temperatures. What limits any barrel on automatic fire is heat. A good guideline, drawn from U.S. military guidance for the M4 carbine: about 12 to 15 rounds a minute can be fired indefinitely, and continuous rapid fire should stop at about 150 rounds so the barrel can cool. .308 Win puts more heat into the barrel with every shot than the 5.56 those numbers are based on, so treat them as an upper limit on an AR-10. Push past that and throat wear speeds up, which shortens barrel life. If the barrel smokes or starts to glow, stop: near 1,000°F the steel is approaching the temperature it was nitrided at, where it can begin to soften and the nitride can lose hardness, and military testing has seen M4 barrels fail at about 1,360°F. A hot chamber can cook off a round in as little as 10 seconds, so clear it quickly or keep it pointed in a safe direction. And heat affects accuracy in every barrel: groups open up as it heats. Faxon’s stress relieving and machining keep point of impact from walking, but let it cool before you check zero or shoot for groups.
Where is it made, and what is the warranty?

Fluted barrel
This barrel was my first purchase ever from Faxon, to go along with my first ever build on my FIRST ever AR10. The fit and finish are superb. I knew it was going to be heavier than any of my M4s, and I was interested in how all of this was going to fit together. When I took it to the range to break in, dial in the adjustable gas block and zero my scope, I couldn't believe my astonishment at the groupings at just 100m. All sub MOA. ALL... I'd had tight groupings before with my M4 and while in the Army, but this...holy. crap. I had my wife get behind it and familiarize herself with it. Even SHE had the same sub groupings AND her zero is the same as mine! Since then, I've purchased a second barrel for her own .308/battle rifle build. We haven't had the chance to take it out yet to get it dialed in - but I am REALLY looking forward to experiencing the same performance Faxon's barrels have to offer!! The Faxon company has won me for life for all my builds!

Love this barrel
After doing a lot of research, I found this company. This was the first of two barrels that I have purchased from Faxon. After all these years, I finally built my very first AR10. I wanted to build a rifle that was very accurate, and in this platform for quick follow up shots. I am shooting right at one MOA (random ammo) with this barrel and I am extremely happy! I'm currently working up my own load data for this rifle to ring out every bit of accuracy that I can. The fit and finish were fantastic. And while I love a great heavy barrel for precision work, I ordered a match series 16 inch .223 Wylde barrel in the gunner profile for a friend building her first carbine. The accuracy of that barrel is outstanding as well. While I have tried many other barrels for different firearms I have built over the years, I will now stick with Faxon for any future builds.

What an outstanding barrel fit and finish is fantastic and price is just right with proper hand loads this barrel sheets three-quarter inch groups all day long out of my custom built Gas gun.
