This giveaway honors the service rifle and the sport it built. At its center is a rifle few shooters have ever held: a modern recreation of the original 1936 M1 Garand design, brought back by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) with barrels and gas trap parts machined by Faxon Firearms in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio.

What Is the CMP M1 Gas Trap Rifle?

The CMP M1 Gas Trap is a new-production M1 Garand built in the rifle's earliest configuration, the "gas trap" design adopted by the U.S. Army in 1936. Instead of a gas port drilled into the barrel, it captures expanding gas at the muzzle with an external assembly and uses that gas to cycle the action.

A Short History of the Gas Trap Garand

  • 1936: The Army adopts the "U.S. Rifle, Semiautomatic, Caliber .30 M1" on January 9, 1936. Early rifles use John C. Garand's muzzle-mounted gas trap system.
  • 1939: Field experience shows the trap is hard to clean, can loosen and is a weak bayonet mount. Garand's drilled gas port design is recommended that October.
  • 1940: Springfield Armory switches to the gas port design. The last gas trap rifles leave the line in August 1940, after roughly 50,000 were built.
  • Today: Most surviving gas trap rifles were converted at the armory, so unaltered originals are rare and highly sought after by collectors.

How Faxon and the CMP Brought It Back

The CMP holds a preserved original gas trap M1 Garand and archived Springfield Armory blueprints, including documentation signed by John Garand himself. Faxon's engineering team worked from those prints and from direct measurement of the original rifle to recreate the parts as closely as possible to the original design intent.

Faxon manufactures the rifle's key gas trap-era components:

  • Barrel
  • Type 3 gas trap assembly
  • Gas cylinder
  • Front sight

The CMP installs them on a new CMP Commercial M1 receiver. Every decision on the project came back to three checks: original reference material, dimensional verification and engineering review. Read the full backstory in our earlier post, Gas Trap M1 Garand Recreated with CMP.

The gas trap project builds on Faxon's broader M1 Garand barrel program with the CMP, which first put Faxon barrels in shooters' hands at the CMP Talladega Premier Expo in 2024. The CMP lists the M1 Gas Trap at $2,650 retail on its New M1 Garand Variants page.
