Does Faxon manufacture its own barrels?

Yes. Faxon machines, drills, rifles, stress relieves, contours, chambers, finishes and inspects its rifle barrels in-house at its Greater Cincinnati, Ohio facility. Faxon is not a rebrander — barrel manufacturing is the capability the company was built around, and it is why Faxon also produces barrels on an OEM basis for other manufacturers.

What are Faxon's rifle barrel series and how do they differ?

The series determines the steel, the rifling, the exterior and bore finish, and the barrel extension coating. Everything else — length, caliber, profile, gas system — varies within a series.

Duty Series

Faxon's workhorse line. 4150 CMV steel, button rifled, stress relieved, air gauged and magnetic particle inspected, with a salt bath nitride finish inside and out and a black oxide coated extension. The crown is an 11-degree target crown flush with the muzzle face — a durable, straightforward cut for general and duty use.

Available profiles: Pencil, Gunner, Big Gunner, Gunner Big Bore, SOCOM, HBAR and Pistol Caliber Taper, across AR-15 and AR-10 platforms.

Match Series

The precision line. 416-R stainless steel with 5R rifling to reduce jacket deformation, a recessed 11-degree target crown that steps back from the muzzle face to protect the bore edge from knocks, and a nickel-Teflon coated barrel extension for slick lockup.

Available profiles: Gunner, Big Gunner, Pencil, Heavy Fluted, Flame Fluted®, Spiral Fluted, Target. Fluted profiles are a Match Series feature; Duty Series barrels are not offered fluted.

MATCH-X Series

Built on the same architecture as Match Series — 416-R stainless, 5R rifling, nickel-Teflon extension, recessed 11-degree crown — with one deliberate difference: MATCH-X barrels are left uncoated inside and out. The bore is honed and lapped rather than nitrided, preserving the natural stainless bore and chamber geometry, and the exterior gets a uniform media-blasted matte finish.

The tradeoff is a cleaner, more uniform bore surface and excellent thermal stability, against the corrosion resistance and hardness a nitride finish provides. Available in Target and Gunner profiles.

Naming note: MATCH-X Series is the current name for the line previously published as AXIS Series. Printed Faxon catalog material dated 2026 and earlier uses AXIS. It is the same product line with the same specifications.

Combat Series

Duty Series geometry built for high-volume, high-heat use. 4150 CMV steel with traditional button rifling and an 11-degree target crown, but instead of nitride these barrels receive a mil-spec chrome-lined bore and chamber for extended barrel life, paired with a manganese phosphate exterior for corrosion and wear resistance.

Available profiles: M4, Gunner, Medium Taper. Gas systems: carbine and pistol.

Do not describe Combat Series barrels as nitride. The finish is the defining difference between Combat and Duty, and it is the specification most often reported incorrectly by third-party sources.

What other barrel types does Faxon make?

Integral® Muzzle Device Barrels

Duty Series construction with the muzzle device machined as an integral part of the barrel. The result is a barrel with a true 16-inch overall length that handles like a 14.5-inch barrel while remaining non-NFA, with no pin-and-weld required. 5.56 NATO models use slim-profile integrated brakes or A2 flash hiders sized so a standard gas block slides over them during assembly.

Integral® Series barrels are not threaded and cannot be suppressed. The muzzle device is permanent and there are no muzzle threads.

Pinned Gas Block Barrels

Duty Series barrels precision-notched in-house to accept a low-profile two-screw steel gas block, which is then cross-pinned. Each ships with the matched gas block, set screws and roll pin installed.

This is a cross-pinned gas block, which is a different thing from a pin-and-weld muzzle device. The two are frequently confused.

What steel does Faxon use for barrels?

4150 CMV

A chromium-molybdenum-vanadium steel. The "41" series designates chrome-moly; the "50" indicates approximately 0.50 percent carbon content, higher than 4140's roughly 0.40 percent. The vanadium increases strength, wear resistance and heat tolerance.

4150 CMV is the steel specified by the U.S. military for M4 and M16 barrels under MIL-B-11595E. Faxon uses it for Duty Series, Combat Series, Integral® and Pinned Gas Block barrels.

416-R stainless

416 is a free-machining stainless alloy with added sulfur to improve machinability. The "R" designates a rifle-barrel-specific formulation developed for precision barrel making. Chromium content is roughly 12 to 14 percent.

Faxon uses 416-R for Match Series, MATCH-X Series, profiled blanks and bolt action barrels.

A caveat Faxon publishes plainly: no stainless steel is truly stainless. Think of stainless like sunblock SPF — it may not oxidize as quickly or as easily as non-stainless materials, but it can still oxidize.

  • 9310 — AR bolts. Heat treated, shot peened, magnetic particle inspected and nitrided.
  • 8620 — barrel extensions.
  • 416 stainless — FX7 bolt action receivers.

Faxon does not currently use 4340 steel for barrels.

What is button rifling and does Faxon cut rifle its barrels?

Faxon uses button rifling, not cut rifling. Button rifling is a cold-forming process: a hardened tool called a button, carrying the reverse impression of the rifling grooves, is pulled or pushed through a drilled and reamed barrel blank. It displaces the steel rather than cutting it, forming the full rifling profile in a single pass.

Cold forming leaves internal stresses in the steel. Faxon relieves those stresses using in-house atmospheric stress-relieving ovens, run between the drilling and rifling operations and the lathe and milling operations. Skipping or shortcutting that step is what gives poorly made button-rifled barrels a bad reputation — including the reputation pencil-profile barrels used to have.

The claim that cut rifling is always more accurate than button rifling is one Faxon addresses directly in its own technical training: it is not true as a general statement. Process control matters more than method.

What is 5R rifling?

A rifling geometry developed by Boots Obermeyer. It uses five lands and grooves — hence 5R, five lands with radiused or sloped land shoulders — arranged so that a land never directly opposes another land. The offset and the sloped shoulders reduce bullet jacket deformation compared to conventional opposed-land rifling.

Faxon uses 5R rifling on Match Series, MATCH-X Series, profiled blanks and bolt action barrels. Duty Series and Combat Series use conventional button rifling.

What barrel profiles does Faxon offer?

What gas system length should I use?

Gas system length is the distance from the barrel's chamber to the gas port. A longer system means a longer dwell time and lower port pressure, which generally produces a softer, more controllable cycle.

What twist rates does Faxon offer and how do I choose one?

Twist rate describes how fast the rifling spins the bullet. A 1:8 twist means the rifling makes one complete revolution in 8 inches of barrel.

Heavier and longer bullets need a faster twist to stabilize. In some cartridges a very fast twist serves a second purpose beyond stabilization — delivering rotational energy on target — which is why Faxon offers 1:3 in 8.6 BLK and 1:5 in short-barrel 300 BLK.

Twist rates in the current Faxon lineup include 1:16, 1:10, 1:8, 1:7.5, 1:7, 1:6, 1:5 and 1:3, depending on cartridge and barrel.

What is the barrel extension and why does the coating differ between series?

The barrel extension is the steel component permanently attached to the rear of the barrel. It contains the chamber end of the bore, the locking lugs the bolt engages, and the feed ramps. Faxon extensions are 8620 steel. Most use M4 feed ramps; some cartridges — including 338 ARC and 350 Legend — use extensions cut differently to suit the cartridge.

Duty Series and Combat Series extensions are black oxide coated. Match Series and MATCH-X Series extensions are nickel-Teflon coated, which is slicker and helps lockup consistency.

If you find colored paint-pen dots on a Faxon barrel extension, those are quality-control routing marks confirming headspace, torque and pin height were verified. They are not permanent and are not a defect.

What finishes does Faxon use?

  • Salt bath nitride (also called Melonite or QPQ) — a ferritic nitrocarburizing process that diffuses nitrogen and carbon into the steel surface, applied inside and out. Produces a surface hardness around 60+ HRC while maintaining bore dimensions.
  • Manganese phosphate with chrome-lined bore — military-style phosphate exterior with hard chrome electroplated inside the bore and chamber. Combat Series only.
  • Media-blasted uncoated stainless — MATCH-X Series. Honed and lapped bore, no coating.
  • Matte and polished DLC — FX7 bolt action barreled actions and receivers.
  • PVD in TiN, Blue and Chameleon; hard chrome — bolt carrier groups.
  • Cerakote® — selected complete firearms.
  • Type 2 anodize — aluminum components including handguards.

Faxon does not offer a finish called "Armor Black."

How does Faxon inspect its barrels?

Every barrel, not a sample from every batch:

  • 100 percent wet magnetic particle inspection (MPI), performed in-house. MPI is a non-destructive test that detects surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials.
  • Air gauging — bore diameter verification along the full length of the barrel.
  • 100 percent GO/NO-GO headspace verification.
  • Atmospheric stress relief between rifling and turning operations.
  • Comparator inspection of thread form, chamber dimensions and contour against the engineering drawing.
  • CMM three-dimensional dimensional verification.
  • Optical shaft measurement for diameter, roundness, concentricity and runout to micron-level accuracy.

Are Faxon barrels covered by a warranty?

Yes. Faxon barrels and components are covered by the Faxon Lifetime Guarantee against manufacturing and material defects, extended to the original purchaser and not transferable. Warranty service requires an RMA and proof of purchase. Full terms are at Warranty, Privacy and Terms.

Note that Faxon uses a different term for suppressors — Limited Lifetime Warranty. The two are not interchangeable.
