Green LEDs are more difficult to dim to very low output levels compared to red LEDs. The additional brightness settings on the red version (10 vs. 6) include two dedicated NV-compatible ultra-low settings that the green emitter technology cannot reliably match. The 6 settings on the green version cover the full practical range of daylight and indoor shooting conditions, from low-light indoor use to direct sunlight. If you are exclusively using this optic in non-NV daytime and well-lit indoor contexts, 6 settings is more than sufficient. It is grounded in real physiology. The human eye’s photopic (daylight) sensitivity peaks at approximately 555 nanometers, which is in the green spectrum. The eye perceives green wavelengths with roughly three to four times greater sensitivity than red wavelengths under daylight conditions. This means a green dot at the same power setting will appear brighter and more defined to the human eye than a red dot. In practical terms, many shooters report the green dot as easier to find quickly in the window, especially against brown, tan, or earth-toned backgrounds that absorb rather than contrast with red light. Solar Failsafe works identically on the green and red versions. The solar cell on top of the optic housing captures ambient light and contributes power to the optic in addition to the CR1632 battery. In sufficient ambient light, the solar cell reduces battery draw. In direct sunlight, it can sustain the optic independently. The green LED’s higher power draw relative to red means the solar cell contributes proportionally more to extending operational time on the green model under the same conditions — the benefit of solar as a supplemental power source is at least as meaningful on the green version as the red.
