FAXON MATCH-X SERIES GUNNER PROFILE 16" MID-LENGTH 223 WYLDE AR15 BARREL
FaxonDescription
What “Honed & Lapped” Actually Means
A barrel bore starts as a drilled and reamed hole. Reaming leaves a surface finish around 32 Ra, which is good enough for a duty barrel and is where most stainless match barrels stop before the rifling button goes through. On a MATCH-X barrel the reamed bore is honed to 8 Ra, a fourfold improvement in surface finish, before it is button rifled, and lapped. A profilometer checks the finish and a borescope checks for tool marks before the barrel moves on.
Why it matters: the smoother the bore, the less copper and carbon it holds, the more uniform the friction on every bullet, and the more consistent the velocity from shot to shot. That shows up as tighter vertical dispersion at distance, a shorter break-in, and a barrel that cleans in a fraction of the passes. Faxon then button-rifles the honed bore with 5R geometry, five lands with sloped sides instead of the sharp corners of conventional rifling, which deforms the jacket less and fouls less again.
The other MATCH-X difference is the outside. Match Series barrels are nitrided; MATCH-X barrels are left as bare 416-R stainless, blasted with S110 media for a uniform matte finish. The bore is plugged and the extension, muzzle threads, and gas port are masked during blasting, so the media only ever touches the exterior. Nothing is added to the steel, so nothing can affect the bore, and the matte stainless surface is thermally stable and easy to keep clean. The trade is that bare stainless wants a wipe of oil after wet or humid use, the same as any stainless match barrel.

Fitment
| Component | Requirement |
| Upper receiver | Any mil-spec AR-15 upper; standard barrel nut |
| Bolt / BCG | Standard 5.56 / .223 bolt carrier group |
| Gas block | .625″ — adjustable or fixed |
| Gas tube | Mid-length |
| Handguard | Any free-float rail; low-profile gas block clears most 13″–15″ rails |
| Muzzle device | 1/2x28; use a .615″ shoulder-indexing device or shims |
| Ammunition | .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO; 1:8 stabilizes 55–77 gr |
The .223 Wylde chamber uses the .223 Remington leade angle with 5.56 NATO freebore and body dimensions, so it holds match accuracy with .223 loads and runs 5.56 pressures safely. The gas port is sized for unsuppressed function with standard loads; an adjustable gas block is recommended if you shoot suppressed or run a lightweight carrier.

How It’s Built and Inspected
8 Ra
Bore surface finish after honing
±.001″
Bore diameter tolerance, air-gauged
100%
Headspace gauged, every barrel
1. 416-R stainless bar is gun-drilled and pull-reamed from the chamber end, then honed to 8 Ra. Bore diameter is checked with go/no-go pins, finish with a profilometer, and the surface with a borescope.
2. The bore is button-rifled with a 5R, 1:8 right-hand twist, then stress relieved. Bore and groove diameters are air-gauged at three points along the length.
3. The blank is chopped, re-centered, and profiled between centers: Gunner contour, .625″ gas journal held to .0007″, 1/2x28 muzzle threads, and the recessed crown.
4. The .223 Wylde chamber is cut and verified on a CMM and borescoped for an even lead. Every barrel is magnetic-particle inspected.
5. The nickel-Teflon M4 extension is torqued to 150 ft-lb, the gas port is drilled and reamed to .081″, the extension is pinned, and headspace is checked with a .223 Wylde go/no-go gauge. Finally the exterior is blasted with S110 media for the uniform matte finish, with the barrel plugged and the extension, muzzle threads, and gas port masked so the media never touches a sealing or bearing surface.

Gas Block, Gas Tube, and BCG for a 16″ Mid-Length Gunner
This barrel needs a .625″ gas block and a mid-length gas tube. The Faxon .625″ adjustable gas block lets you meter the .081″ port for suppressed or lightweight-carrier builds without a screw in the gas path; the fixed 3-screw block is the lighter, simpler choice for an unsuppressed rifle. Both are sized for this journal.

MATCH-X 16″ Gunner .223 Wylde FAQs
What is the difference between MATCH-X and Match Series?
Both are 416-R stainless with 5R button rifling, a nickel-Teflon extension, and a recessed target crown. MATCH-X adds a bore that is honed to an 8 Ra finish and lapped before rifling, and leaves the exterior as uncoated bead-blasted stainless instead of nitride. Match Series is the nitrided, harder-wearing choice; MATCH-X is the smoother-bore, maximum-consistency choice.
What does the Gunner profile weigh, and what is it good for?
1.35 pounds. The Gunner keeps a .750″ Government diameter from the chamber to the gas block, where heat and stiffness matter, then steps down to a .625″ journal and a slim forward section. It handles like a pencil barrel and holds accuracy through a string better than one. It is the profile for a lightweight precision carbine, not a barrel you plan to mag-dump until it glows.
Can I shoot 5.56 NATO in a .223 Wylde chamber?
Yes. .223 Wylde uses 5.56 NATO body and freebore dimensions with a tighter .223 Remington leade, so it handles 5.56 pressure safely and shoots .223 match loads more accurately than a NATO chamber. Both .223 Remington and 5.56x45 are correct for this barrel.
What bullet weights does a 1:8 twist stabilize?
Everything from 55 gr to 77 gr, which is why 1:8 is the standard all-around twist for a 16″ .223 Wylde. It stabilizes 69 and 77 gr match bullets at 16″ velocities and is not so fast that light varmint bullets over-spin.
Do I need to break in a honed and lapped barrel?
Less than a conventional barrel. Break-in is mostly the process of shooting the tool marks smooth; the 8 Ra honed finish has already done most of that. Clean after the first range session, then shoot it. Expect it to copper-foul lightly and clean quickly.
How do I care for an uncoated stainless barrel?
416-R is a stainless alloy, but it is not immune to corrosion. Wipe the exterior with a lightly oiled cloth after shooting in rain, humidity, or after handling with bare hands, and run a patch with oil through the bore before storage. That is the only maintenance difference from a nitrided barrel.
Which gas block and gas tube do I need?
A .625″ gas block and a mid-length gas tube. The journal is 1.1″ long, so any low-profile block fits. If you plan to run a suppressor or a lightweight carrier, use the Faxon .625″ adjustable gas block so you can tune the .081″ port down.
Is the barrel extension installed and headspaced?
Yes. The nickel-Teflon M4 extension is torqued to 150 ft-lb, pinned, and the assembly is checked with a .223 Wylde go/no-go gauge before it ships. Install it in a mil-spec upper with a standard barrel nut and a standard 5.56 bolt; no additional headspacing is required.
