Why Choose the Pencil Profile

The pencil profile is designed for shooters who want the lightest practical barrel without giving up the durability and QC expected from Faxon. With a slimmer contour and a .625" gas block journal, this 10.5" pencil barrel reduces weight and frontal area for faster handling and less fatigue on extended carry, while the carbine-length gas system helps deliver reliable cycling and easier tuning than pistol systems.

Installation & Compatibility

  • Standard M4 barrel extension for compatibility with AR-15 bolts and uppers.
  • Use a low-profile .625" gas block on the 1.1" journal for a flush, lightweight setup.
  • 1/2-28 muzzle threads accept brakes, compensators, and direct-thread suppressor adapters; verify suppressor rating before use.
  • Tune buffer/spring, gas tube length, and muzzle device to match your ammo and desired function for optimal reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this barrel chrome-lined?
No — this model uses a black nitride finish inside and out for wear and corrosion resistance.
What are the advantages of a pencil profile?
Pencil profiles save weight and reduce bulk at the front of the rifle, improving handling and balance—especially useful on carbine builds and AR pistols—while still offering sufficient strength for typical duty and defensive use.
Can I suppress this barrel?
Yes. The barrel is 1/2-28 threaded for common 5.56 muzzle devices and direct-thread adapters. Confirm your suppressor’s caliber rating and tune your gas system accordingly.
What ammo weights work best?
Modern 55–77 gr 5.56 loads perform well. Shorter barrels may benefit from heavier or faster powders; test and tune for best results in your setup.

Overview: Lightweight 10.5" Pencil Profile 5.56 Barrel for AR-15 Carbines

When you need a compact carbine that won’t slow you down, the Faxon Duty Series 10.5" Pencil Profile 5.56 NATO barrel delivers a high-value combination of low weight, service-grade durability, and repeatable accuracy. The pencil contour reduces mass at the front of the rifle for quicker transitions and better balance, making it a top choice for shooters who prioritize handling without compromising the structural integrity expected from a duty-series component.

This barrel begins with certified 4150 CMV bar stock and is button-rifled to a proven 1:8 twist, a versatile stabilization rate for 55–77 grain projectiles commonly used in defensive and match applications. Fully stress relieved to minimize point-of-impact shifts over time, each barrel receives a robust black nitride finish both inside and out to resist wear and corrosion while keeping bore maintenance straightforward. Attention to final details — including an 11° target crown, air-gauge testing, magnetic particle inspection, and individual headspace checks with hardened gauges — ensures the barrel leaves the shop ready to perform.

The 10.5" length paired with a carbine-length gas system provides improved dwell compared with pistol-length setups, which can lead to smoother cycling and easier tuning across a wider range of ammunition and muzzle devices. The slimmer .625" gas block journal (1.1" length) supports low-profile gas block options, while standard 1/2-28 muzzle threads accept a wide selection of brakes, compensators, and direct-thread suppressor adapters.

Whether building a lightweight patrol carbine, a balanced compact rifle, or a maneuverable AR pistol, the Faxon 10.5" pencil profile barrel balances handling and real-world durability. Backed by Faxon’s in-house manufacturing and stringent QC processes, it’s an excellent option for shooters seeking a performance-focused, low-mass barrel for 5.56 NATO applications.

    A little update

Posted by Rev. Philip Westerfield on Apr 28th 2018

Well, I would like to give a little update on this barrel. I have been shooting it some and I have to say that the accuracy has gotten better. With the Hornady 55gr Gunner the average group is around 1" at 100 yards. I have shot some handloads with both 69gr. and 75gr. bullets and again they were about 1 moa. It opens up a little bit when hot, but we are taking about 2" groups. Not bad for a pencil weight 10.5" barrel with a 2.5X scope! I will say that the worst group that I have gotten was when new, with M193 and it was still a respectable 3" group at 100 yards. I'm impressed with the quality and accuracy of this barrel. Keep up the good work Faxon!

    10.5 pencil barrel

Bought this for a build for my wife. Already put 100+ rounds through it. Tight groups. From 25 to 100 yards. So far great. I would recommend this barrel and this company. I have already ordered a 6.5 grendel barrel from here, will let you know how it goes.

    10.5" pencil is shooter

Let's get the bad out of the way first. It took the USPS 8 days to deliver the barrel. As I live an hour and half away from Faxon, that was frustrating! After I received the barrel I inspected it and it was machine and finished beautifully. I installed it and checked it out and it was perfect. I just got home from zeroing the BUIS and scope. With Federal Lake City XM193 it was shooting 3" groups at 100 yards. With Hornady American Gunner 55gr HP match it was shooting 2 1/2" groups and the best of the day was a 2" group! It was shooting on par with my 16" CHF barrel with a 1-6X scope. While This 10.5" SBR is wearing a 2.5X scope! This is my first Faxon barrel, but it won't be my last! I'm already planning on a build with the 18" Gunner barrel! I'm very happy with the quality and accuracy of this Faxon pencil weight 10.5" barrel. Keep up the great work!
